273 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MAYHEW, Douglas Christopher Douglas was born on September 30, 1897, in Canterbury, Quebec, to William and Anne (Kerr) Mayhew along with two brothers, Robert and Herbert. Prior to World War I, he was working as a farm hand. Douglas enlisted for World War I in Bury, Quebec on January 18, 1916, in the Army (Regular Force) with the 117th OS Battalion. After basic training in and around Montreal, his unit was shipped to Halifax where they boarded the SS Empress of Britain and were on their way to England. Once there, he was transferred to the 23rd Reserve Battalion. He was hospitalized in Aldershot on August 31, 1916, with measles for three weeks. He was sent to Passchendaele, France where he was caught in a bomb blast and struck by a piece of shrapnel to the left eye on October 30, 1917. He was sent to the Eye and Ear Hospital in Folkstone where he received a glass eye. Doug was classified as medically unfit for military duty, sent back to Canada, and discharged on December 24, 1918. He married Nina Hazel (Major) in 1929. He was a 28-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch 532. Douglas passed away in 1990 and is laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg, Ontario. MCARTHUR, David John David was born on April 16, 1929, in Oakville, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on June 11, 1946 and served as Pipe Corporal in Lorne Scot’s Peel Dufferin and Halton Regiment, and the Oakville Legion pipe and drum Band. After his time in the Army, he owned and operated McArthur Parcel Delivery and Janeway-McArthur, Diving Contractors in Oakville, ON. He enjoyed a long career as a commercial underwater diver in Lake Erie for various companies. David obtained his fresh water boat licence and operated tugs for various companies for a few years and later owned and operated Simcoe Small Engine Repair in Simcoe, ON. He married Barbara Anderson Daniel in 1958 and had three children. He was a member of Simcoe Legion Branch 79 for 54 years. David passed away on October 12, 2007. McARTHUR, Duncan Duncan was born on October 2, 1888, in Campbeltown, Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1911 and lived in Oakville, Ontario. He married Jeannie Robertson McMillan in 1912. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on August 31, 1915 and served with the 92nd Highlanders and the Black Watch in France and Belgium during World War I. He was discharged in 1919. Duncan passed away on May 27, 1944 and his name is engraved on the War Memorial for World War I Veterans at George’s Square, Oakville, ON.
