271 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MATTHEWS, Ronald Hepburn Ronald was born in Preston, Ontario on October 22, 1923, to Arthur Russell and Leila May (Hepburn) Matthews. His public and high school education was in Preston. He was a member of the United Church, a scout for seven years with the 4th Preston Troop (scout leader). He enlisted in 1942 with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force). After his basic training, he was promoted to Sergeant and sent overseas. He took training to become a Pilot in Ireland. On February 13, 1944, he was commissioned as a Pilot and stationed with 407 Demon Squadron. The next day, Pilot Officer Ronald Matthews and his four-man crew boarded a Wellington aircraft HF 142 to make a customary air test prior to operations. The plane stalled on takeoff and crashed at RAF Station Limavady and the crew of five perished in the crash on February 14, 1944. Ron is buried at Drumachose (Christ Church) of Ireland Churchyard in Limavady, Ireland. Ronald Hepburn Matthews is commemorated on page 380 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. MAUCH, William William was born in Windsor, Ontario on February 19, 1939. He enlisted in the Army (Reserve Force) in February 1954 and served with the 48th Highlanders until his release in 1957. William is a fifty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Whitby Branch 112. He has been residing in Newcastle, Ontario since 2011. MAYHEW, Andrea L. Andrea was born in North York, Ontario on August 31, 1962, and grew up in Richmond Hill. She enlisted into a summer military program in 1984 with 709 Toronto Communication Regiment out of FortYork Armouries in Toronto. Andrea was a teletype op, radio op, admin clerk, computer programmer, and completed her junior Leaders course as well. Andrea served in Canada and overseas. On completion of her tour in Lahr, Germany, she returned to Canada only to return to CEF Lahr to complete her work building the Base Commander’s Micro Computer System. Andrea continued her journey after she left the Forces in Australia and the South Pacific. Living in New Zealand, Australia, and several islands, she finally returned home to Canada. Currently, she is an active ten-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 426 in Newmarket during her retiring years.
