265 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MAJOR, Kenneth John Kenneth was born in Williamstown, Ontario on July 1, 1918. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) onApril 25, 1941 with the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders and deployed to the 1st Battalion, Royal Rifles of Canada on October 18, 1941. Kenneth was killed in action on December 21, 1941 at Notting Hill Hong Kong and buried at Sai Wan Memorial Cemetery. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with overseas bar and Hong Kong Bar. MANUEL, Edward Edward was born in Carguire, Wales on September 22, 1897, to John and his mother (name unknown). At some time, the family moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He was a driver by trade. On December 1, 1915, he joined the Army (Regular Force) with the 119th Overseas Battalion in Sault Ste. Marie and was assigned to the 58th Battalion. Private Edward Manuel was shipped overseas and on August 8, 1918, he was killed in action in Moreauil, France when hit in the head by shrapnel. He is buried in the Hourges Orchard Cemetery in France. His name is inscribed on the Cenotaph in Richards Landing, St. Joseph Island, Ontario. MARSHALL, Andrew Oblander Andrew was born on October 4, 1920, in Elora, Ontario. He enrolled in the Canadian Army (Regular Force), Canadian Infantry Corps on April 9, 1942, at the age of 21 and served in Canada with the Pictou Highlanders qualifying as a driver mechanic before being posted overseas. He served with the Perth Regiment in Holland until after VE Day (May 8, 1945). He was then posted to the 3rd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry of Canada Regiment (Canadian Occupation Force) serving in Holland and Germany. He was promoted to Corporal in the Rifle Platoon. His service record states that he was a good shot, and described him as a good and efficient soldier. He was awarded the France and Germany Star and War Medal 1939-1945. When he was released from the army on March 7, 1946, he returned to Elora where he married and raised a family. He went to work for Beatty Bros. in Fergus and worked there for over 25 years and was administrator of Farmlines at the time of his retirement. Andrew passed away on September 16, 2001.
