263 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MAIKA, Peter J. Peter was born on January 18, 1918, in Barry’s Bay, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on March 5, 1940 and was discharged on November 15, 1940 in order to enlist in the Special Reserves. He accepted a Commission on August 29, 1942 and was promoted to Flight Officer on July 28, 1944. On the night of December 29, 1944, the aircraft that he was on failed to return from an anti-UBoat patrol over the Indian Ocean. Peter was presumed dead on December 30, 1944. His name is inscribed on the Singapore Memorial, Column 442. MAINLAND, William Leonard William was born in Maryborough, Ontario on September 22, 1920, to William John andAnnie Edna Mainland, along with two brothers, Ray and Jim. He received his education at SS #8 Maryborough. Prior to World War II, he was working as a farmhand. He enlisted in the Army in May 1940 with the Royal Canadian Engineers. After extensive training, he held the rank of “Sapper”. He was shipped to England via Scotland and also served in France and in Germany. He was a combat engineer highly trained to be involved with Commando Raids, some of his duties would entail building bridges, constructing fortifications and digging trenches while in the midst of battle. He received his discharge on November 15, 1945 and went back to working as a farmhand. He married Velma Jean (Tomkins) and they raised seven children, Marjorie, Frederick, Larry, Rick, Barb, Marlene, and Susan. He was a past member of The Royal Canadian Legion Arthur Branch 226 in Arthur, Ontario. His daughter Marlene is a member of New Hamburg Branch 532. William passed away on June 19, 1993. MAINPRIZE, Albert Albert was born on October 31, 1897, in Trout Creek, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on May 31, 1918 and served with the Canadian Engineers in England. After training, he was sent to Seaford, England. After his discharge in 1919, he joined The Royal Canadian Legion St. Marys Branch 236. He returned to farming and married Violet Stapleton on December 15, 1926 and had three children. Albert died on August 27, 1977 and is buried in the St. Marys Cemetery.
