261 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MAHER, Edmond “Fraser” Fraser was born on September 7, 1956, in Sussex, New Brunswick to Edmund and Anna Maher, along with one brother, Dennis, and one sister, Janice. His schooling climaxed upon graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1976. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on October 2, 1985, with the Royal Canadian Medical Corps serving in Canada, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Afghanistan. His duties were in the capacity of Air Medivac, Intensive Care and as an Operating Room Nurse. His postings included CFB Summerside, NDMC – Ottawa, and 1 Canadian Field Hospital – CFB Petawawa. Captain Maher retired on October 3, 2005. His father, Edmund, served in World War II and in Korea with almost thirty years of service and his grandfather served on the battlefields in Belgium and France during World War I. Fraser has been residing in Ottawa since 1989. MAHER, Edmund Edmund was born on September 20, 1925, in Barrie, Ontario to James Patrick and Olive (Jones) Mahar, along with three siblings: Olive (Sims), Barney, and Iris (Shakell) Maher. The call to arms intrigued Edmund to join the military shortly after his sixteenth birthday. He enlisted on November 19, 1941, with the Grey Simcoe Foresters and fought with distinction in Ortona, Italy. He was discharged on July 16, 1946. With repeated encroachments below the 38th Parallel by North Korea/China, the United Nations call for arms drew him back to the military. On August 23, 1950, Edmund re-enlisted with the Army Provost Corps and served in Korean and then carried on with the 2nd Battalion, Black Watch, Royal Highland Regiment of Canada. He was discharged with the rank of Sergeant on February 29, 1975, serving just shy of thirty years. Edmund married Anna (Mirrrlees) and they raised three children: Dennis, Fraser, and Janice (Lidstone). He joined The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. After he retired from the military, he moved to New Dundee and transferred his Legion membership to New Hamburg Branch 532. He was a Legion member for a total of 25 years. Edmund died on December 30, 2011, at the age of 87, and is laid to rest in the Union Cemetery, New Dundee. MAHER, James Patrick James was born on March 28, 1895, in Manchester, United Kingdom (Cheetham), to James P. and Rose HE (Fogg) along with six siblings: Catherine, Dennis, Daniel, Edmund, Norah and Daniel. Prior to World War I, he was employed as a cabinet maker. James enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on October 20, 1915, with the Royal Army Medical Corps and served in Belgium and France as a stretcher bearer/medic. He was discharged on August 16, 1917, and was awarded the British War and Victory Medal and Silver War Badge. James married Olive Elizabeth (Jones) and they had two children, Olive and Barney. They then immigrated to Canada on May 10, 1924, where they added two more children to their family, Edmund and Iris. He was a member of the Meaford Legion Branch 32. They lived in Meaford where he worked as a caregiver/custodian. He died in Meaford on September 16, 1972, and he is buried in the Lake View Cemetery in Meaford.
