251 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LOCKE, Robert Robert was born in Toronto, Ontario on February 3, 1928. He volunteered for the Merchant Navy (Regular Force) on March 3, 1945, at the age of seventeen, to serve during World War II. He was assigned to Norwegian Ship, Minerva set off in convoy from Halifax to New Jersey where they took on munitions and other supplies for the war effort and then on to the United Kingdom. After delivering supplies to various UK ports, he found himself waking on board ship in Hull, UK to bells and flags for VE Day. After more movement of supplies for the allies, his ship finally arrived back in the US and he found himself landing in Baltimore just in time for Victory in Japan. After his discharge on August 14, 1945, he went on to other civilian cargo ships and lake boats. He left the lakes to work in sheet metal for TCA. He had a great affinity for art, sculpture, and painting. He wound up training to make and fit artificial limbs at Sunnybrook Hospital and served many other veterans in that capacity throughout his professional life. Two of his paintings commemorating his convoy crossings are in the National War Museum in Ottawa. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Leion Milton Wesley Branch 426. Robert passed away on February 18, 2024. LOGAN, William William was born on May 3, 1871, in Cornwall, Ontario to George and Ellen (Dunsheeth). At some point, he moved to Richards Landing, a small village on St. Joseph Island east of Sault Ste. Marie. His attestation document shows that his parents were deceased and that he was a farmer. On January 19, 1916, he enrolled in the Army (Regular Force) with the 119th Overseas Battalion and sailed to England in August 1916. While he was in England and France, Pte. William Logan served in a 3rd Labour Battalion and 11th Railway Battalion. William returned to Canada in November 1918 and discharged on December 28, 1918. He married Dolly Harrison and they lived in Richards Landing until he passed away on November 2, 1949. William is buried in St. Joseph Township Cemetery. MacARTHUR, Clarence R. Clarence, the fourth son of Archibald and Minnie MacArthur, was born on September 23, 1924, in Priceville, Ontario. He joined the Air Force (Regular Force) in 1942 and served in Summerside, PEI. He was released from service in 1945. Clarence passed away in 1997.
