She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) on July 1, 1961, and served in administrative positions at St. Jean, Quebec; Downsview, Ontario; and Bagotville, Quebec where she met her future husband, Allan Alls. She was released from the service on September 15, 1963, and now lives in Erin, Ontario. Diane had a short career as she met her future husband at the LF/00 074 Bagotville and at that time could not stay in the service and be married to an officer. ALSOP, William Jarrett “Bill” Bill was born on October 12, 1923, and raised in Fenwick, Ontario, the eldest of four children of Hugh and Minnie Bell Alsop. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) in 1941 and was assigned to Ground Crew. He wanted to be a pilot but was assessed as colour blind. He served overseas from May 1943 until August 1945, first in Britain, then France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. The Air Reconnaissance Wings were responsible for risking flights over enemy territory to take photos required before invasion and military planning as the army advanced from Juno Beach through Europe. The Wing had to follow closely behind and moved often. He took photos of the aftermath and damage from a major enemy air strike by the Germans on Allied bases (Operation Bodenplatte) on New Years Day 1945 including the airbase at Eindhoven where he was stationed. When reminiscing, he would talk about taking cover in a foxhole during the Luftwaffe airstrike in Eindhoven or about driving equipment onto shore after D-Day, but little about what he saw in Belsen. Bill returned home, married Elsie Smith in 1946, and began farming in Pelham. He and Elsie had two children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613 for over thirty years. Bill passed away on November 2, 1990. AMIRAULT, Douglas Joseph “Doug” Doug was born in Berwick, Nova Scotia on May 7, 1938. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on August 22, 1956. He was a decorated Corporal in the Canadian Armed Forces for twelve years. He received the NATO Medal while deployed in Germany, the United Nations Medal and Peacekeeping Medal while deployed in Cyprus and the Canadian Decoration Medal while on native soil. In the summer of 1967, while with the #2 Signal Squadron, he participated in the Canadian Centennial Celebrations. The Royal Canadian Signals were asked to relay a message from Signal Hill, NL to Victoria, BC using every means of communication the Canadian Armed Forces had ever used up to date. He was part of the Morse Code Link at Iron Bridge, Ontario. Upon his release from the Canadian Armed Forces on August 22, 1968, he went to training in Aylmer, Ontario to become a Constable with the Lancaster O.P.P. where he stayed until his retirement in May 1994. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Cornwall Branch 297 for over twenty years. Doug passed away on December 1, 2021.
