239 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LAUTENSCHLAGER, Edward John “Ed” Ed was born in Kitchener, Ontario onApril 23, 1918, to Thomas Henry and Rubina (Grundenberger) along with two siblings, June and Harold. He attended public and high school in Kitchener. Prior toWorldWar II, inApril 1937, Ed joined the Militia (24th Field Ambulance) in London where he advanced to Sergeant under RSM Charles Meeker. He enlisted with the Regular Army in June 1940 with the Royal Canadian Artillery and trained as a Gunner. In July 1941, he was on his way to England. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant at Caterick, England. He was posted with the 12th Field Regiment and taught heavy artillery (25 lb). When the war was over, he was shipped back to Canada and was discharged in July 1945. Edward married Winnifred Annie (Musson) and they raised two boys: Keith and Jim. He was employed at Union Carbine working in sales. A highlight of his career was Captain of the Guard of Honour during Princess Elizabeth and Prince Phillip’s visit to Canada in 1951. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch 532 in 1960 and was a member for 32 years. Edward died on January 27, 1987, and has been laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg. LAUTENSCHLAGER, Harold George Harold was born in Kitchener, Ontario on September 28, 1923, to Thomas Henry and Rubina (Grundenberger) along with one brother, Major Edward John and one sister, June Vera (Schmidt). After Harold completed high school, he was employed working in electro painting. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on April 9, 1942, with the Scots Fusiliers and started his basic training in London, shipped overseas to England, more training. He was transferred to the 1st Division and wounded twice in North Africa. After being discharged from the hospital, he was posted with the 5th Division, fought in Italy and France. Once the war was over, Harold was shipped back to Canada and discharged on January 10, 1946, returned to Kitchener. Harold married Evelyn Florence (Luft) and raised three children, Gwynn, Julian, and Kathleen. He worked for Fred Daniels’ and retired from Flood’s Plumbing and Heating after 35 years. He was Deputy Chief of the New Hamburg Fire Department. In 1951, he was instrumental in obtaining a charter to have a Legion. Harold passed away on December 8, 2017, after 62 years of continuous Membership in Branch 532 New Hamburg. He was a founding/charter member, a long-time Executive Member and was awarded a life membership. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg. LAUTENSCHLAGER, Julian Harold Julian was born in Kitchener, Ontario on April 27, 1955, to Harold and Evelyn Lautenschlager along with two sisters, Gwynn and Kathy. He attended Grandview Public School in New Hamburg and Waterloo Oxford High School. Prior to enlisting and while attending high school, he worked part-time at Murray’s Food Market. Julian enlisted on June 5, 1973, with the Royal Canadian Service Corps as a Supply Technician. During his service, he did a UN Tour in Egypt and then one in Cyprus. Closed CFS Baldy Hughes in 1988. He served as the TQMS (Technician Quarter Master) as a Warrant Officer at Blackdown Cadet Training Centre, plus eighteen years at Camp Borden. Julian and Kathleen live in Angus, Ontario and raised two boys, Conrad and George. Julian served 41 years in the military and received his discharge on June 6, 2014. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch 532 since 1974 and recently received the 50-year Medal. His father, Harold, was a World War II Veteran and a 62-year member of the New Hamburg Legion.
