233 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KOSTIS, John Cyril John was born on May 25, 1922, in Toronto, Ontario, the son of George and Winnifred Kostis. He joined the Militia in London July 1940 as a Sapper with the Royal Canadian Engineers, 2nd Battalion, 7th Field Coy, enlisting full time in the Army (Regular Force) with the RCE on February 22, 1941. Basic training began in Chatham and Petawawa, proceeding overseas from Halifax to the UK in November 1941. During his training in the UK, John qualified as a Driver Mechanic and Dispatch Rider. The 2nd Bn, 7th Fld. Coy landed in France on July 6, 1944. Serving 49 ½ months overseas in UK and northwest Europe, John returned to Canada aboard the troop ship HMT Mauretania and honourably discharged on January 28, 1946. Sapper Kostis was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, War Medal 1939-1945, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. On April 17, 1953, John re-enlisted in the Armed Forces, joining the 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery as a Gunner. Applying his experience as a Driver Mechanic, he was with the 2 RCHA until May 4, 1956, receiving an honourable discharge. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion #2 Roosevelt Branch. Passing on May 2, 1961, John is buried in the Veteran’s section at Woodland Cemetery, London. KROEPLIN, Albin Joseph Albin was born on March 1, 1894, in Chepstow. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on June 11, 1918 and served as a Sapper with the 1st Depot Battalion, Western Ontario Regiment and 2nd Canadian Engineers. He was discharged on July 6, 1919. Albin passed away on March 11, 1969. KROEPLIN, Oliver Francis Oliver was born in Chepstow on April 12, 1896. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on May 23, 1918 and served with 1st Battalion Depot, Western Ontario Regiment, Canadian Garrison until his discharge on January 9, 1919. Oliver passed away on June 11, 1938 in Pontiac, Michigan.
