221 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND JORDAN, Melvin Leroy Melvin was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan on September 24, 1924. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) and served with the Tank Guard Unit Canada in Holland, the United Kingdom, and Continental Europe until his discharge on August 10, 1946. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He resided in Acton, Ontario from 1947 to 1980 and was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197 for several years. Melvin passed away on September 4, 1980. KALBHENN, William Alexander William was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia on February 9, 1958. He was raised in Hespeler from 1958 until he joined the Canadian Forces (Regular) in May 1975 as an MSE OP 935 Logistics. Postings include CFB Moose Jaw, SK, 4 Svc Bn Lahr - S&T Company and CFSAL Borden, Transportation Training Centre. In 1988, he was awarded the Best Master Corporal of the Battalion and the 4 Svc Bn Commanders Commendation for his contributions to the Battalion during his posting. Bill retired under the FR Program in June 1993 and has been employed as a Senior Manager in the Transportation Safety and Insurance business. Bill was awarded CD, Special Service NATO, and King Charles III Coronation Medal. He serves as the Branch #272 Service Officer, 1st Vice of Branch 272 and the District C Veteran Service and Seniors Chair. He was previously the Zone C-2 Veteran Service Chair. He resides in Cambridge, Ontario, and is an active fourteen-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Hespeler Branch 272 and his Hespeler community. KASTER, Elmer John Elmer was born on October 6, 1895, in Blenheim Township, to Samuel and Hannah (Sararas) Kaster along with three brothers: Herbert, Norman and Howard. The family was living in Petersburg, Ontario when Elmer received his draft letter as per the Military Service Act to report in London to enlist. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on November 3, 1917, in Galt and was posted with the Canadian Infantry, Central Ontario Regiment, 4th Reserve Battalion. He embarked from Canada on July 26, 1918, for his trip to England, while on board he became sick with influenza and died of pneumonia on October 12, 1918. He is buried in Plymouth (Efford) Cemetery in Devon, England. Private Elmer John Kaster is commemorated on page 439 of the First World War Book of Remembrance in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. He is commemorated in the Mannheim Mennonite Cemetery.
