215 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND JOHNSON, Joseph Edwin Joseph was born on March 15, 1895, in Birkenhead, Merseyside, England to John and Ellen (Foulds) Johnson. The family emigrated to Canada sometime before the Great War. He was a pattern maker at the Iron Works in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Joseph enrolled in the Army (Regular Force) with the 19th Battalion on November 11, 1914, the same day as his brother Fred and went overseas with the Central Ontario Regiment in 1915. OnApril 20, 1916, according to his death notice, Private Joseph Johnson died in a Boulogne, France hospital of an unexpected hemorrhage of the brain. A newspaper clipping from a Sault Ste. Marie newspaper lists his death was from gunshot wounds. He is buried in the Boulogne Cemetery in France. Joseph’s name is inscribed on the Memorial Wall in Sault Ste. Marie. JOHNSON, Oswin Munro Oswin was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on January 14, 1921, to Fredrick and Helen Johnson. He was occupied as a body mechanic working at his father’s car dealership. Oswin enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force on August 23, 1940. He rose to the rank of Sergeant in the Testing and Development department at Canadian Forces Base Rockcliffe near Ottawa. In September 1943, he married Madeline McLeod and over time, they had three boys. He was released from service on October 23, 1945. Oswin eventually took over his father’s Studebaker dealership and in 1961, he opened a Volkswagen dealership in Sault Ste. Marie. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25. Oswin passed away on January 31, 1986 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Sault Ste. Marie. JOHNSTON, Alfred H. Alfred was born on June 27, 1905, in Peterborough, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on June 24, 1940 and served with the 12th Field Regiment in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. While overseas, he was billeted with a three generation Dutch family in Nijmegen. Following his discharge in October 1945, he resumed working at Goodyear Tire. Alfred was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Marmora Branch 237 for 25 years before he passed away on February 6, 1973.
