213 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND JOHNS, Stuart Louis “Stu” Following in his father’s and older brother Tom’s footsteps, Stu enlisted on June 29, 1943, at the age of eighteen. He trained at Chatham and then Camp Borden in the Armoured Corps and went overseas in early 1944. Assigned to the 22nd Armoured Division, Canadian Grenadiers Guards, he served with them through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He met up with his brother Tom twice during the war. He received a citation and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for service during an action at the Kusten Canal in Germany. He volunteered for Pacific service in May 1945. Stu was discharged on March 30, 1945, at Wolseley Barracks in London, Ontario at the age of 21. His medals and decorations include the Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, Normandy Combat Badge, and French Legion of Honour. After the war, he married Flo Draper and raised three daughters in Windsor, Ontario. Stu passed away on November 9, 2023. JOHNS, Thomas Elmer “Tom” Tom was born in Windsor, Ontario on March 9, 1923. From 1940 to 1942, he served in the Essex Scottish Regiment. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on July 7, 1942, at the age of nineteen with the Essex Tank Regiment just before its title changed to the 30th Reconnaissance Regiment (Essex Regiment) of the Canadian Armoured Corps. He trained in Dundurn, Saskatchewan from October 1942 to June 1943 and went overseas to England in July 1943. In June 1944, he transferred to the 8th Reconnaissance Regiment (14th Canadian Hussars) of the 2nd Canadian Division. He landed in Normandy, France on July 6, 1944. Cpl. Johns participated in all 8th Reece action including Caen, Falaise, Antwerp, Scheldt (Holland) and the invasion of Germany. He met his brother, Stu Johns (Tank Crew), twice during the war. He was discharged on December 8, 1945, at Wolseley Barracks (London, Ontario) at the age of 22. Tom received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and War Medal 1939-1945. After the war, he married Jean Fewings raised a daughter and son in Windsor, Ontario. He pursued a career in with Canada Customs in Windsor until his retirement in 1986. Tom passed away on July 9, 2000. JOHNSON, Fredrick Munro Fredrick was born on June 2, 1896, in Birkenhead, Merseyside, England, to John W. Johnson and Ellen Foulds. The family moved to Sault Ste. Marie in 1912. His attestation document states that he was a sailor by trade. He enrolled in the Army (Regular Force) with the 19th Battalion, Central Ontario Regiment with his brother Joseph on November 11, 1914. He was discharged from active duty on November 7, 1917, after receiving wounds. He returned to Sault Ste. Marie and married his wife Helen, had three boys, and started a car dealership. Frederick was president of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 in Sault Ste. Marie from 1946 to 1947. He was also Zone H-4 Commander from 1949 to 1951. Fredrick passed away on May 19, 1961, and is interred in the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Sault Ste. Marie.
