201 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HOOPER, Thomas Herbert Thomas was born on June 27, 1918, in Peterborough, Ontario, to Frederic and Mary (Morphet) Hooper. He was a stores clerk and later became a teacher. He enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) on August 10, 1942 following two years officer training. He was later transferred to the United Kingdom and was released on February 21, 1945. On August 15, 1942, he married Audrey Murray and they had three children. In the summer of 1950, the family moved to Sault Ste. Marie where he took up a teaching position that lasted thirty years. Shortly after moving to Sault Ste. Marie, he joined the 49th Heavy Aircraft Artillery Regiment rising to the rank of Major. Tom passed away on June 8, 1998 in Toronto. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Sault Ste. Marie. HORST, Amon A. “Al” Al was born inWilmot Township on September 24, 1920, to Menno B. and Lovina (Bauman) along with siblings Melvin, Elam, David, Lena, Mary, Barbara, Emma, Martha and Verna. He enlisted in the army (Regular Force) inWorldWar II in May 1942 with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserves and was out on convoy duty where he crossed the North Atlantic 24 times. He was discharged in September 1945. Amon married Hilda (Hubert) and together they raised six children: Dana, Brian, Darryl, Cathy, Peter and Susan. Amon had everyone’s attention when he told stories, and he loved his Cleveland Indians. After his release, he worked at Uniroyal for 38 years. He joined the Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch 532 in 1966 and had 41 years of continuous service. Amon volunteered wherever he was needed, and he enjoyed time spent in the garden, specifically gardening vegetables. Amon Horst passed away on April 13, 2007, and has been laid to rest in the Wilmot Mennonite Cemetery in Wilmot Township. HORST, Hilda Hilda was born in Crimea on March 11, 1920, to Peter and Mary (Reiner) Heibert/Hubert. They immigrated to Canada when Hilda was two years old, and in Canada, three more children were added to the family: Peter, Mary (Penner), and Wanda (Trautman). Hilda enlisted on March 23, 1943, with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force). She was stationed at Rockcliffe where she was trained in photography, developing, enlarging, and making 3D slides for stenography. Her training also included all aspects of aerial photography. She was transferred to England and became an instructor on flights during war time. She was discharged on April 20, 1945. Hilda married Amon Horst and lived in New Hamburg raising their six children: Dana, Brian, Darryl, Cathy, Peter and Susan. She was very artistic and loved working in the garden, specifically with flowers. She was always ready to volunteer when needed. Hilda died on April 1, 2007, and is laid to rest in the Wilmot Mennonite Cemetery.
