195 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HOBBS, Sidney John Sidney was born in Llantrisant, South Wales on April 16, 1890, the son of William and Susan (Spear) Hobbs. He immigrated to Canada in 1910 and was employed as a machinist and a chauffeur before enlisting in the Army (Regular Force) in Valcartier, Quebec on September 20, 1914. He attested to the 1st Divisional Supply Column, Mechanical Transport and he embarked to the United Kingdom with the 1st Canadian contingent on October 3, 1914. He served in France fromMarch 1915 through January 1917 which was when he was wounded by gas and was returned to the UK for treatment. On February 20, 1917, he boarded the SS Grampianand returned to Canada where he was discharged on March 8, 1917 as no longer physically fit for war service. He married Amy Griffiths in Toronto on April 27, 1918 and they went on to raise four children. Sidney died on November 16, 1978 and is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto. HODGSON, Arthur G. “Art” Art was born in McGillivray Township, Ontario on November 29, 1916. He enlisted in the CanadianArmy (Service #A60189) at Wolseley Barracks in London, Ontario in 1940 as an Infantryman. After completing his basic and trade training, he was posted to Camp Borden. Art’s voice was very unique which eventually landed him the position of Drill Sergeant at Camp Borden. He also served overseas in England and the Netherlands. He loved the Dutch people and was amazed how a dirt farmer was treated like a king in Holland. His medals include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. Art was honourably discharged in 1945 at the rank of Corporal. He passed away on November 23, 1999, at the age of 83. Art was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion and a Meritorious Service Medal recipient. HODKINSON, William Arthur William arrived from England in Eastern Canada in 1915 at the age of ten and was sent by rail to Saskatchewan to work on a farm. He eventually made his way to Ontario and settled and married in Trenton. Together with his wife, they raised three children. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Kingston, on February 12, 1941, at the age of 36, and joined the Royal Canadian Artillery. He served with distinction in Italy, France and Germany. He was awarded the 19391945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. He was demobilized to Trenton on February 23, 1946 and worked as a cheese maker, postal worker, and was employed at the Trenton Cotton Mills as a stationary engineer. Mr. Hodkinson passed away on February 8, 1993 and was interred in Trenton.
