193 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HILL, John Herbert John was born in Welland, Ontario on August 25, 1920. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps Trans. N.S.S.H. the Canadian Army (Regular Force) in Three Rivers, Quebec on January 10, 1942. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Continental Europe. He was part of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He followed the Juno Beach invasion and pushed into Normandy, Holland, Belgium and Germany. John completed 1490 days of active duty, including 849 overseas. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was released on February 8, 1946. Upon returning home to Port Robinson, he married Mary Neill in June 1949. There they raised three sons, later moving to Fonthill. John worked in structural steel, ending his career as superintendent at Ward Ironworks in Welland. He enjoyed a long retirement, staying active with curling and golfing well into his eighties. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 4 for 68 years. John passed away on March 5, 2014 shortly after his wife at Woodlands of Sunset, Fonthill in his 94th year. HOBAN, Patrick L. Patrick was born in Beauséjour, Manitoba on September 10, 1922. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on September 6, 1940 and served with Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He fought in the Black Forest in Germany and was part of the Liberation of Holland. Patrick received the France and Germany Star, the Defense Medal, the War Medal 1939-1945, and the Canadian Forces Decoration with Clasp. He ended his military career in November 1968 as a Warrant Officer, then entered into the Public Service Department of National Defense where he worked until November 1983 and was awarded the Long Service Medal for forty years of service. Patrick passed away on March 27, 2003. HOBBS, James Oswell James was born on October 20, 1914, in Toronto, Ontario, to James Murray and Amy (Griffith) Otley. His father was killed at Vimy Ridge on April 9/10 while serving with the PPCLI. His mother married Sidney John Hobbs who adopted James. He married Ethel Marie Causton on June 26, 1937 in Leaside, and was employed as a vulcanizer when he enlisted with the RCAF on May 27, 1941. He received his wings on March 20, 1942 and is pictured in the Toronto Star holding his son Jim who is touching his new wings. James served as a flight instructor in Vulcan AB, Arnprior, Belleville, Picton, Trenton and Lachine, experiencing many different planes. He progressed through the ranks, ultimately commissioned as a Flight Lieutenant. He embarked for the United Kingdom onAugust 28, 1944 where he continued as a flying instructor, returning to Canada on July 8, 1945. He was discharged to Reserve status on September 4, 1945. James died onAugust 13, 1957 of a heart attack, after completing a rescue flight from Timmins to Moosonee as a pilot with Austin Airways. He is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.
