181 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HATT, Wilfred “Bill” Bill was born on July 14, 1888, in Lion’s Head, Ontario. He joined the Canadian Army in 1914 and was sent to France soon after where he joined the 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish) at Vimy Ridge and served under Colonel C.W. Peck of British Columbia. He was never wounded but was exposed to poison gas. After the war, Bill sold cars in Wiarton and from there he, with his brother France and later Bill Cox, operated the White Rose Garage and Service Station. Eventually, he became the sole owner of the business and operated it as the Bayview Garage. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Wiarton Branch 208. Bill passed away on June 8, 1957. HATTEN, George Ortan George was born on October 10, 1893, in the small settlement of Portlock, on Lake Huron, east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, toWilliam and Louisa Hatten of Desbrats, Tarbutt Township, Algoma. On his attestation document, he lists his trade as a rail roader. He enrolled in the Army (Regular Force) with the 119th Overseas Battalion and was later transferred to the 58th (2nd Central Ontario Regiment). On August 24, 1918, he was wounded but stayed on the front lines. Four days later, on August 28, 1918, Private George Hatten was killed in action when “hit by machine gun fire” near Boiry, France. In 1921, his family was notified of his reinterment in Visen-Artois, British Cemetery in France. His mother was presented with the Memorial Cross. George’s name is inscribed on the cenotaph in the Port Finlay Cemetery east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. HAWTHORN, Francis Francis (Frank) was born on March 19, 1922, in Aberdeen, Scotland. At the age of seven, Frank emigrated from Motherwell, Scotland in 1929 with his parents and two brothers to Brantford, Ontario. In 1940, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) and was a pilot during World War II. He did his training in Western Canada and transferred to Gimli, Manitoba. He flew T-33 Thunderbird jets. Frank was later transferred to Halifax and later to the 404 Buffalo Squadron in Greenwood, Nova Scotia as a Captain on the Argus. He was transferred to Lahr, Germany and then Downsview, Ontario. Frank was married to Catherine (Granton) and raised five children. After retiring to Brantford, Ontario in 1970, he joined the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 90 and was a member for 29 years. Frank passed away on May 24, 1999 and is buried in Farringdon Burial Grounds in Brantford.
