161 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GREENLEAF (WATSON), Catherine Catherine was born in Suffield, Alberta on March 8, 1921. She and her three sisters spent their early years in Suffield, Alberta. Following her father’s death, her mother returned to Ontario where Catherine and one of her sisters, Mary, continued their education. Catherine graduated from St. Michael’s Hospital School of Nursing in Toronto. During her student years, she completed the basic course for civilian defence. She enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served as a Nursing Sister with the RCAMC. She was discharged in 1952 and resided in Durham, Ontario. Catherine passed away on August 8, 2024. GREGG, James Elmer James was born in Pinkerton, Ontario on August 20, 1895. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on September 15, 1915, and served with the 71st Battalion during World War I. He was discharged on February 15, 1919. James passed away on October 24, 1924. While he did not die in service, his death was attributed to wounds received on September 18, 1916, and poisoning due to eating berries contaminated with warfare agents. These events left him with lifelong health problems. GREMM, Kenneth Walter Kenneth was born on November 30, 1925, in Kitchener, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in April 1942 and served with the Highland Light Infantry Company (Galt) in France, Germany, Holland, England, and Scotland during World War II. He entered the war at the Reichswald Forest in February of 1945. The HLI of C was the first Canadian unit across the Rhine. He was one of the liberators of Speldrop, Bienen and Leeuwarden in Holland, among others. He served in Company C with the 1st CanadianArmy, 2nd Canadian Corp, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Brigade and 13th Platoon before he was discharged on April 26, 1946, having been awarded the France and Germany Star. Kenneth was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530 for 22 years before he passed away on September 23, 1987.
