157 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GRAHAM, Melvin Samuel Melvin was born on March 17, 1922, in Echo Bay, a small community east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, to Alice and Samuel Graham. His trade was car inspector on the Canadian Pacific Railway. On October 26, 1942, he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) and joined the 48th Highlanders of Canada. Private Melvin Graham was killed in action in Italy on May 23, 1944, and is buried in the Cassino War Cemetery in Italy. His name is inscribed on the Echo Bay Cenotaph. GRANT, Owen Gourlay Owen was born in Ottawa, Ontario on October 25, 1925. He joined the Air Force in 1943 on reaching the minimum age for enlistment. He was undergoing training in England and was scheduled to be posted to serve in Burma when the war ended. He was discharged in 1945 and returned to Canada. Utilizing the program for returning service men, he completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in journalism at Carleton University in Ottawa. Owen passed away in November 2005. GREENFIELD, Bernard Bernard was born on October 10, 1920, in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1941 and served with the 5th Division of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany during World War II. He was discharged in 1946 and married a year later. After the war, he joined the Toronto Township Police department in 1951 and served with them until 1980, receiving the Long Service Medal. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the Legion Meritorious Service Medal and Palm Leaf. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Huntsville Branch 232 for 67 years. Bernard passed away on March 21, 2014.
