151 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GILPIN, Joseph E. Joseph was born on May 9, 1899, in Copper Cliff, Ontario. Before enlisting in the Canadian Army on May 30, 1918, he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway as a machinist. He served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in England and France during World War I and was gassed during active duty. After his discharge in 1919, he returned to Canada and went to work as a machinist for Inco at the Copper Cliff smelter. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Copper Cliff Branch 224. Joseph passed away on May 30, 1948. GIRARD, George Thomas George was born on March 13, 1895, in Osgoode, Ontario, to Thomas and Sarah (Wallace). By the time he was to join the army his residence was listed as St. Joseph Island, east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on October 9, 1917, and took his military medical in Sault Ste. Marie. He was called up on May 6, 1918, and was assigned to the 1st Central Ontario Regiment, 4th Canadian Infantry Battalion in Toronto. Thomas arrived in England on June 18, 1918, and served in England and France. He was discharged on April 24, 1919. After the war, he returned to Richards Landing on St. Joseph Island where he was employed by a local power company. He married Elizabeth Rains, and they had three children. George passed away on April 21, 1963, and is buried in the St. Joseph Township Cemetery. GLASS, James Henry James was born in York on March 15, 1947. He enlisted in the Army in 1962 and served as a reservist with the Lorne Scotts C Company until his release in 1965. James has been residing in Acton for 41 years and is a 43 year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Acton Branch 197.
