149 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GILPIN, Edwin C. Edwin was born on June 18, 1914, in Sudbury, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1942 and served in England duringWorldWar II. Following his discharge in 1946, Edwin worked for Loblaw’s for 42 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Sudbury, Ontario for over fifty years. Edwin passed away on November 5, 1995. GILPIN, Frederick E. Frederick was born on January 5, 1922, in Copper Cliff, Ontario. In March 1943, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and went on to serve on HMS Naboband HMCS Algonquinin Norway and the High Seas during World War II. He was part of the crew on HMS Nabobwhen it was hit by torpedoes off the coast of Norway. It was initially thought the crew would have to abandon ship, but they managed to save the vessel. The next day, he and most of the remaining crew were transferred to a rest camp in Scotland. He was later posted back to Canada and trained in Esquimalt, BC in order to prepare for duty in the Pacific. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to work for Inco in Copper Cliff, Ontario. Frederick passed away on April 29, 2007. GILPIN, George George was born on March 26, 1898, in Copper Cliff, Ontario. He enlisted in the CanadianArmy on December 30, 1915 using his older sister’s year of birth in order to join. He served with the 2nd Canadian Pioneer Battalion of the Royal Canadian Engineers in England and France duringWorldWar I and was gassed during active duty. Following his discharge in 1919, he went on to work for the Inco Mining Company. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Copper Cliff Branch 224. George passed away on July 13, 1945.
