147 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GAWLEY, William “Lorne” Lorne was born on May 15, 1924 in Malone, Ontario. He joined the Canadian Army on January 3, 1944 and served with the Royal Canadian Artillery in Amsterdam and Holland during World War II. He was discharged on August 3, 1946. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Marmora Branch 237. Lorne passed away on November 9, 1983. GIBB, George George was born on April 1, 1895, in Montrose, Scotland to John and Mary Gibb who later resided in Laird Township, Ontario east of Sault Ste. Marie. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) and served four years in the Black Watch, enrolled in the 119th Overseas Battalion and was assigned to the 58th Battalion, Central Ontario Regiment. Near Cambrai, on September 29, 1918, Private George Gibb was killed in action when receiving machine gun bullets to the head. George’s final resting place is in the Anneux British Cemetery in France in 1920. His name is inscribed on a plaque in the Knox Presbyterian church in Tarbutt Township east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. GIBBONS, Richard William Richard was born on August 24, 1925, in Lyons Head, Ontario, to Gordon and Elizabeth (Smith) Gibbons. He lived in Tobermory until enrolling in the Army (Regular Force) with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders on June 5, 1944 where he served in France and Germany. He was discharged on September 12, 1946. He returned home and married his wife, Jean. He was employed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Richard, Jean, and their five children moved to Sault Ste. Marie in 1965 where he worked with the Sea Lamprey Control. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25. Richard passed away on April 17, 1998 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Sault Ste. Marie.
