141 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GANDER, William John William was born on March 19, 1885 in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1901 and served with the 19th St. Catharines Regiment, the 19th Lincoln and Welland Regiment, and the 81st Battalion CEF in France and England during World War I. He was wounded in action in Passchendaele, France on November 13, 1917. Lieutenant Colonel Gander was discharged on October 14, 1931. He was awarded the British War Medal, the Victory Medal 1914-1918, the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers Decoration. William was Commanding Officer of the Lincoln Regiment from November 9, 1927 to October 14, 1931. After his service, he worked as a light keeper at the Pt Weller lighthouse in St. Catharines from 1931 to 1946. William passed away on May 22, 1948. GAPP, Douglas Edward Douglas was born on December 18, 1920 on St. Joseph Island east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to Margaret and August Gapp of Richards Landing. His listed trade was millwright at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie. On March 16, 1942, he enrolled in the RCAF (Regular Force) and trained as an air gunner. During his down time, he took Royal Canadian Legion sponsored math classes. On September 12, 1944, in his Lancaster PD294, he was on a mission over Darmstadt, Germany when they were shot down. Douglas did not survive the crash and is buried in the Durnbach Cemetery, Bavaria, in southern Germany. His name is inscribed on the Richards Landing Cenotaph. GAPP, Robert P. Robert was born on November 23, 1924, in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on May 5, 1943. He was on convoy duty on several ships in the North Atlantic during World War II, and was discharged on October 24, 1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Milton Wesley Branch 426 for 25 years. Robert passed away on May 28, 2013.
