489 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND YOUNGBLUT, Eric Sylvester Eric was born on March 6, 1922 in Welland, Ontario. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Engineers on October 5, 1942 and actively served as a sapper in Canada, England, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland. His landing for the invasion of Normandy was on Bernières-sur-Mer Beach and he participated in the liberation of Holland. Eric met his wife at an Anglican Church Valentine’s dance held in Nova Scotia just before he was shipped out to England. They communicated by letters during his time overseas. He considered these letters “like a good dose of medicine”. Upon his return home he married his wife and had three children. While stationed in Nijmegen, Holland, he developed a friendship with a Dutch family that continued his lifetime. He returned to Holland with his wife to introduce her to his Dutch family on their 25th wedding anniversary Eric passed on October 4, 2009 and was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613. ZINN, Albert Albert was born in London, England on March 29, 1880. Albert and his wife Mary lived in Morris, Manitoba and they had five children: three boys, Robie, Ernest Albert, Lewis and two girls, Mary Agnes and Alice. Albert worked as a clerk prior to his service. On January 17, 1916, Albert joined the military and upon completing his basic training was transferred to the 222nd Overseas Battalion. He was hospitalized on March 20 with swollen feet and then posted to No. 10 Special Service. He was ordered to be re-examined by medical staff which produced the following notation: “Albert Zinn has varicose veins in both legs which are aggravated by the wearing of puttees. It is recommended that he be discharged as medically unfit for normal duties.” Albert was given an honourable discharge on December 31, 1916. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch Kitchener 50 and thenWaterloo Branch 530. Albert passed away in 1959. His name has been inscribed on the Waterloo Legion Veteran’s Memorial Wall. ZIMMER, David Harvey David was born in Formosa, Ontario on February 2, 1896. He joined the military on June 18, 1918 in London, Ontario and took his training with the 1st Depot Battalion. He was sent overseas during World War I with the Western Ontario Regiment and was posted as an orderly in Whitley, England with the 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion. He was posted to Canada on July 25, 1919 and arrived in Montreal on August 4, and discharged August 8, 1919. David was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Kitchener Branch 50 andWaterloo Branch 530. David passed away in 1961 and his name has been inscribed on Plaque #1 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall.
