407 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, David Edward Campbell “Dave” Dave was born in Ekfrid Township, Ontario on July 17, 1914. He was the eldest of three children, born to Harold and Edith Smith. He married Ada Ilene Wright of Kerwood, Ontario in 1942 shortly before enlisting in the Army. He served with the 125th LAA, the Provost Corps and Infantry, in Canada, Labrador and the United Kingdom and then the Reserves for a time following World War II. Dave and Ilene raised three sons: Terry, Bryan and John in Watford, Ontario. He was the village Postmaster for twenty years until his retirement in 1979. Dave was actively involved in many community projects and organizations, including minor hockey, minor baseball and the volunteer Fire Department. Dave joined The Royal Canadian Legion Watford Branch 172 in 1946 and over the years was one of its biggest boosters. He served in many capacities and held many offices including President. He was awarded a Life Membership and the Legion Meritorious Service Medal. Dave continued to serve his Branch until his passing on April 15, 1990. SMITH, Julian Lockburn Julian was born on May 10, 1922 at Ten Mile Point Sheguiandah, Ontario on Manitoulin Island. He enlisted with the Army in 1941 at the age of nineteen and trained in Camp Borden Ten Mile Point Sheguiandah, Ontario. Julian was with the Canadian Armored Carrier Division and went with the Kangaroos in Holland. The Kangaroos were the only Canadian regiment in the British Army’s 79th Armoured Division. Julian was wounded on March 4, 1945 at Hochwald Forest Battle and discharged in 1946. Julian met his wife in England, and they were married in Angus, ON. Upon returning home to Angus, Julian opened a store and was very successful and moved to New Lowell. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 516 New Lowell for over 50 years. Julian passed away October 1, 1996. SMITH, Eric J. Eric was born in April 1923 and raised in Arkona, Ontario. In 1941, he was employed in London, Ontario. In 1942, Eric enlisted in the Army during World War II and was assigned to the Perth Regiment, Senior Infantry Battalion of the 5th Canadian Armoured Division and landed in England in March of 1943. Eric’s regiment soon found itself in Italy, immediately engaged in fierce combat with the enemy. Eric was killed in action there on February 5, 1944, two months short of his twenty-first birthday. At a memorial service in his hometown Arkona, a letter from Eric was read: “I am in the hands of God and I pray for the safety of myself and comrades in arms.”
