405 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SINGER, Clifford Clifford was born in Oxford County, Ontario on April 6, 1898. He was working on a farm when he enlisted for the Army on April 12, 1916 just after his eighteenth birthday. Clifford served with Oxford’s Own 168th Battalion. While serving with The Princess Pat’s, he contracted pneumonia and passed away a few weeks later at # 42 Clearing Station on October 2, 1917. SMITH, Bernie Cecil Bernie was born in Ekfrid Township, Ontario on January 29, 1916. He was the second of three children, born to Harold and Edith Smith. He married Mildred Johnson of Plympton Township, Ontario in 1942, shortly before enlisting in the Army. He served with the Oxford Rifles at various postings in Canada during World War II. Bernie and Mildred had five children: Bernice, Beverly, Bobby, Bonnie and Brenda. After the war, they lived inWatford, Ontario before a business opportunity led them to Glencoe, Ontario. Bernie was a supporter of many community projects and organizations, but in particular, The Royal Canadian Legion. Bernie joined Watford Legion Branch 172 before transferring to Reg Lovell Branch 219 in Glencoe. He served in many capacities and offices including President. He was awarded a Life Membership. Bernie continued to serve his Branch until his passing in 2012 at the age of 96. SLOAT, Robert James “Bob” Bob was born in May 1920 in North Easthope Township, Ontario to Alexander and Myrtle Sloat. He had three brothers: Earl, Lorne and Leonard and two sisters: Jean and Margaret. Bob enlisted with the Army on July 8, 1942 and served overseas during World War II with the Highland Light Infantry in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe until demobilization. He was discharged on May 2, 1946 and earned the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Bob returned to Canada and settled inWaterloo. He married Margaret (Foerster) onApril 13, 1946. They had two sons, James and Blaine. Bob served for nineteen years as a Fire Prevention Officer for the Waterloo Fire Department visiting homes and teaching the community valuable information about fire safety. Bob passed away in 1972 at 52 years of age and is buried in Parkview Cemetery in Waterloo, Ontario. He was a Charter Member of The Royal Canadian LegionWaterloo Branch 530 and his name has been inscribed on Panel 1 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall.
