Military Service Recognition Book 540 ONTARIO COMMAND WOERMKE, Irvin Gottlieb Irvin was born in Arnprior, Ontario on October 8, 1923. Growing up, he had a passion for flying and for building model airplanes. He enlisted with the RCAF on October 8, 1942 and was assigned to Glace Bay, N.S. as an aircraft technician during World War II. Subsequently, he was stationed in England with the 2nd Tactical Airforce where he maintained Spitfires and Hurricanes. Prior to D-Day, he was parachuted into France behind enemy lines, making contact with the French Resistance. He then helped set up landing strips for troop carriers to land on D-Day. He saw combat service throughout Europe including France, Holland, and Germany. He was discharged with the rank of Corporal on February 20, 1946, he returned to Arnprior, married and raised a family while directly involved with local Hospital Board, Board of Education and Renfrew County Housing. He was a member of Arnprior Legion Branch 174 for over thirty years. Irvin was honoured in 2011 as an Ontario Senior Citizen of the Year; he later died on December 23. WOOD, William William was born on November 25, 1894 in England. He enlisted in the Army in January 1916 and served with 160 Battalion, Company B in Canada, France, and England during World War I. He was discharged in May 1919 and returned to Chesley where he worked at Krug’s Factory until it closed. He was an active member of Chesley Legion Branch 144. WOOD, Ronald Barrie Ronald was born in Toronto, Ontario on May 16, 1944. He trained at CFB London in 1962 and served with B Company 1 RCR from May 3, 1962 to May 3, 1968. He served in Fort York Germany from 1962 to 1965, Cyprus from 1966 to 1967, took a Parachute Course in 1967 and NCO course in 1967. Ronald then joined the London Service Battalion Transport in July 1980 and served until June 1981. He has been a member of Orillia Legion Branch 34 for over thirty years.
