Military Service Recognition Book 532 ONTARIO COMMAND WEST, Howard W. Howard was born in Hearst, Ontario on August 26, 1925. He enlisted in the Navy on May 2, 1942 and served onboard HMS Magdalen, HMCS New Glasgow, and HMCS Hallowell. Howard served in the Battle of the Atlantic, Strike force from June 6, 1944 to March 1945. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Battle of the Atlantic Star and Clasp, 1939-45 Volunteer Star and Maple Leaf Clasp. Howard was discharged on October 16, 1945 and returned to Hearst. In 1951, he moved to Wawa and joined Branch 429. He opened up a men’s clothing store and joined the Wawa Volunteer Fire Department in 1952. He became Chief of the Fire Department in 1958 and kept the position until 1978. He was a member of Hearst Legion Branch 173 for six years and Wawa Legion Branch 429 for 51 years. Howard passed away on December 6, 2002. WHITE, Ivan R. Ivan was born in Bracebridge, Ontario on April 21, 1924. He enlisted in the Army in 1943. He served with the Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry Highlanders in France, Belgium and Holland during World War II. Ivan was a D-Day Veteran. He was wounded in action in Holland in October 1944. He suffered a total loss of vision at twenty years old. He was discharged in 1945. Ivan moved to Victoria, BC and worked in Blind Stand at Victoria post office before moving to Courtenay, BC. At the time of his death he owned a small farm and gardens raising sheep and hens. He had an amazing woodworking shop and was truly an amazing man. He was a member of Comox Legion Branch 160 in British Columbia. Ivan passed away on April 13, 2005. WHITE, Aubrey E. Aubrey was born in Draper Township, Bracebridge, Ontario on January 23, 1921. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 and was stationed in Victoria, BC during World War II. He was discharged in 1944. Aubrey passed away on April 27, 2013.
