Military Service Recognition Book 522 ONTARIO COMMAND UHRIG, John A. “Jack” Jack was born in Southampton, Ontario on November 9, 1916. He enlisted in the Army on April 4, 1941 with the 4th Canadian Anti-Tank Regiment. Jack served in Canada, United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe during World War II. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, and France and Germany Star. He was discharged on December 5, 1945. He returned to Southampton and married Eleanor Storrey and had five children. Jack was a member of the Southampton Legion Branch 155 for many years, was on the town council in the 1950’s and worked at the Hepworth furniture factory until it closed, then started his own furniture refinishing business which his sons still run today. Jack passed away on February 18, 1988. VALE, Frank Frank was born in Beachville, Ontario on August 8, 1924. He joined the Army at the young age of seventeen. He was sent to Nanaimo, BC for training. He was then stationed in England and was sent to France three days after D-Day. He was wounded in France on October 7, 1944. He was wounded again later on. After recuperating in England, he was sent back and saw service in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. When the war ended he signed up with Essex Scottish Regiment to go to Japan with the Far East Forces. He was sent home on leave until time to go there but the war with Japan was declared over with the dropping of the atomic bomb. He was a member of Beachville Legion Branch 495. Frank passed away on December 5, 1964. UNDERWOOD, Martin David Martin was born in Sheerness, England on June 16, 1963. He immigrated to Victoria, BC in 1974 and joined the Canadian Scottish Regiment in 1980 as an infantry soldier. In 1984, he joined the regular forces as a Sapper with the Combat Engineers serving with 1CER and 4CER. In 1989, he remustered to the Airforce. In 2006, Martin was commissioned from the ranks and retired in 2008 as a Lieutenant. Martin served with all three elements of the Canadian Forces. He ate mud with the Engineers, breathed desert dust with the Airforce and drank Seawater with the Navy. Martin served enjoying postings and participating in Operational Deployments throughout the world, such as Europe and Operations Apollo in the Afghanistan conflict. Martin has always been a proud supporter of the tri-service concept of the Canadian Forces. His service units on land were Canadian Scottish Regiment (C Scot R), 1 Combat Engineer Regiment (1 CER), 4 Combat Engineer Regiment (4CER); Air were BAMEO Cold Lake, 1 Air Maintenance Squadron (1AMS), 421 Fighter Squadron (421 (F) SQN), 439 Fighter Squadron (439 (F) SQN), 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron (442 (T&R) SQN), 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron (443 (MH) SQN) CFSATE; Sea was HMCS Protecteur. He served in Europe and in Canada at CFB Chilliwack, CFB Lahr, CFB Baden Sollingen, CFB Cold Lake, CFB Comox, CFB Borden and CFB Esquimalt. He was on long term deployments in Operation Apollo (Operation Enduring Freedom) and throughout the Afghanistan Operational Zone. Martin chose Forest Ontario to life with his wife and daughter upon his release in November 2008. He has been a member of Forest Legion Branch 176 for seven years.
