515 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND THOMPSON, Russell “Russ” Russell was born in Dauphin, Manitoba in 1919. He was one of ten children. His oldest brother served Canada during World War I and Russell followed to serve in World War II. He worked as an electrician in Flin Flon, but his love for his country and the need to do the right thing pushed him to join the Army in 1941. Russ first served in Canada as an electrical fitter but in 1943 – to go overseas – he retrained to Driver Operator and joined the 5th Division, first Canadian Corp in England. In 1944, he moved through France and Belgium to Holland, Hilversum and Groningen, making many Hollander friends, friendships that he still enjoys today. In 1945, Russell married his fiancée, Marion Keeler, in Seeley’s Bay, Ontario. There he raised his family, and became an active member of the community as the founder of Thompson Electric and serving the Seeley’s Bay Legion for over 65 years. THOMSON (SHIELDS), Elizabeth Irene Irene was born near Milton, Ontario but was raised in Saskatchewan. She joined the CWAC at Regina, Saskatchewan in 1945. She trained at Kitchener, Ontario, before being stationed at the Simcoe, Ontario base in Quarter Master Stores and later at Hamilton and Toronto, ending up at Oakville. She was discharged in June 1946. Irene has been a member of Oakville Branch 114 for 45 years and has also been a Life Member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 114. She was a Past Zone Commander for L.A. Zone B7 for six years plus Life Member of the Legion. In 2012, she received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. THOMSON (KENNEDY), Eleanor Eleanor was born in Newmarket, Ontario on January 8, 1926. She enlisted in the Army in September 1944 and served with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia during World War II. She helped record the experiences of prisoners of war returning from Japan. She was discharged in July 1946. She served in the Militia from 1952 to 1967 and taught in schools for 32 years. She played pipes in several bands until 2012. She was awarded the CD and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2012. Eleanor has been a member of Col. Fred Tilston V.C. Legion Branch 385 for nineteen years.
