Military Service Recognition Book 514 ONTARIO COMMAND THOMPSON, Durwood M. Durwood was born in Portland Township, Ontario on March 24, 1930. He enlisted in the Army on February 22, 1957. He served with the Royal Canadian Dragoons as signaller in 1957 and with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as a vehicle mechanic. Durwood served in Germany from October 10, 1957 to November 29, 1959 and in Canada from 1960 until 1963. He was discharged on April 10, 1963. After his service, he and his family resided in Oshawa, Ontario. He worked as a mechanic for Oshawa Transit. He then became a Bus Driver, Inspector then Assistant Manager. While in Germany he met Elvis Presley. He was a member of Port Perry Legion Branch 419 for thirty years. Durwood passed away on January 7, 2010. THOMPSON, Kenneth J. Kenneth was born in Mount Forest, Ontario on March 1, 1955. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in April 1974 and retired in June 2000. He spent his career as a Mobile Support Equipment Operator. He completed basic training at CFS Cornwallis, NS and trades training at CFB Borden. Ken and his wife Karen moved several times which extended from CFB Toronto, 4th Service Battalion, Lahr, Germany to CFB Portage La Prairie, CFB Trenton, CFB Chilliwack, CFB Wainwright and CFB Borden CFSAL. He assisted with aid to civil power on many occasions to name a few such as the 1976 Olympics, Montreal; Fires in Manitoba, the ice storm of 1999 in Quebec. After Ken’s retirement they returned to Mount Forest, Ontario. Kenneth has been a member of Captain Fred Campbell V.C. Legion Branch 134 for 18 years. THOMPSON, Kenneth E. Kenneth was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on September 23, 1919. He enlisted in the Army on February 4, 1942 and served with the RCEMC in Canada, England and Holland during World War II. Kenneth was discharged on March 4, 1946. After the war, he worked at Algoma Ore in Industrial Relations then as Hospital Administrator. He has been involved with Sault Ste Marie Legion Branch 25 and Wawa Legion Branch 429 totalling 52 years. He was a Life Member of Branch 429 and was 1st Vice President in 1946 and again in 1955, Secretary in 1950, Executive Committee Member from 1991 to 1994. He was Commander in Chief of the Air Cadet Squadron Sponsored by Branch 429 of The Royal Canadian Legion from 1955 to 1965. He was also an auditor of the Branch’s Financial Records on a number of occasions, the last in 1994. In addition, Kenneth not only organized the program for the Remembrance Day services including the parade, but was also master of ceremonies of the service which took place at the Cenotaph and the local high school. Kenneth was a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Wawa since 1961, and held various positions until 1993. He also was appointed to the board of the Algoma and District Home for the Aged in April 1986 and has been re-elected each term for a long time. Kenneth passed away on November 3, 1997.
