Born in Yorkshire, England on January 10, 1930, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Stevenson attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was commissioned in the Prince of Wales’ Own Regiment of Yorkshire. He spent eighteen years in the Far East, Middle East, Europe and Africa, including active service in Egypt, Malaya, Kenya, Aden and the British Cameroons. He spent a year as adjutant with a TA regiment; the Leeds Rifles. The last four years were spent serving with the Green Howards (affiliated to the Queen’s York Rangers in Toronto) in Libya, Malaya, Hong Kong, Borneo and the UK. He joined the Queen’s York Rangers on arrival in Canada in 1968. Michael is married with three grown sons. He is a member of the Fort York Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion. He was Director of Administration for a large Toronto-based financial institution and for the last five years of his business career, he was Director Administration of Atomic Energy of Canada. He was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for Volunteer work, including 16 years with the Sunnybrook Veterans and President of the Imperial Affairs Association of Canada. STICKLEY, Frederick John Alexander Frederick was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 13, 1918. He enlisted in the RCNVR in 1939 and served in the North Atlantic on board HMCS Collingwood and HMCS Napanee during World War II. He advanced from Ordinary Seaman Gunner to Petty Officer to Warrant Officer. On the shakedown cruise on Lake Ontario, the officers in command had a wager as to which ship would come closest to the target on gunnery practice. He didn’t come close, he blew the target out of the water! Also, the glass around the wheel house shattered. On one trip the ship was painted white so as to provide an easy target for the submarines. The crew was ordered to write home and make out their last will. He was discharged in 1946 and in 1962, he enlisted in the Army and joined the Governor General Horse Guards (Reserves). The men used to look after the horses at the Queen’s Plate. He was released when his medical records caught up with him. He was a member of Mount Dennis Legion Branch 31 for 33 years. Frederick passed away on June 12, 1988. STEWART, Maxwell Norman Maxwell was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on November 5, 1932. He enlisted in the Navy on June 29, 1953. He served on HMCS Portage, HMCS Gaspe, HMCS Magnificent and HMCS Algonquin in Canada, the High Seas, North Atlantic, North Sea, Caribbean and Mediterranean. He was discharged in June 1958. Maxwell has been a member of Bruce Mines Legion Branch 211 for fourteen years and Sault Ste. Marie Legion Branch 25 for eight years.
