Military Service Recognition Book 494 ONTARIO COMMAND SHEPHARD, Gordon R. Gordon was born in Sarnia Township, Lambton County, Ontario on February 7, 1923. He joined the Highland Light Infantry on November 13, 1942 as a Private. He served in Canada, United Kingdom, and Continental Europe during World War II. He trained at Ipperwash Camp and Woolsley Barracks in London, then stationed in England and saw overseas action in France and Belgium where he was wounded twice. He received the France and Germany Star, Defence Medal (1939-45), C.V.S.M. and Clasp and War Medal 1939-45. Upon discharge on March 27, 1946, he returned home to Brigden where he met and married his wife Erie Dennett and raised two daughters. After working at Holmes Foundry in Sarnia for 35 years, he took an early retirement on June 1, 1981. Gordon was a charter member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 635 in Brigden where he acted as Sergeant of Arms. After a three year battle with cancer, Gordon passed away on March 30, 1993 at the age of seventy. SHIER, Charles Russell Charles was born in Cambridge, Ontario on June 4, 1919. He enlisted at the age of eighteen in the Ontario Tank Regiment at Oshawa on September 23, 1939 and served during World War II. During the summer of 1940 he did guard duty in internment camps before returning for tank training in Camp Borden. He was transferred to England for further training in the Churchill Tank Course. Served as tank driver and maintenance mechanic during the Sicily and Italian campaign until his tank became disabled and he was injured while exiting the vehicle. He transferred to hospital in Africa for treatment of his knee injury in June 1943, then to England in December 1943. He received the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was discharged on July 14, 1944. He was a member of Legion Branch 488 for 35 years. Charles passed away on January 4, 1978. SHIELDS, William Noel “Bill” Bill was born in Oakville, Ontario on December 24, 1926 and joined the Royal Canadian Navy (RCNVR) in December 1943 at Hamilton, Ontario and served during World War II. His first ship was the HMCS Petrolia, a corvette on convoy duty. Later he was drafted to the HMCS Trentonian, which was torpedoed and sunk on February 22, 1945 in the English Channel while escorting a convoy to Antwerp, Belgium. Bill was discharged in December 1945. He is a Life Member and Past President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 114, Oakville. He was awarded the Legion’s Meritorious Service Medal and Palm Leaf.
