489 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SALTER, Frederick A. Frederick was born in Parry Sound, Ontario on February 27, 1924. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served with the Fifth Division in Europe during World War II. Frederick fought the war in Holland, Belgium, Germany and France. He was discharged in 1946. Right after the war, Frederick bused soldiers from camp to camp in converted trucks as there was no other means of transportation other than cattle cars. Frederick met his wife to be, Corry, while “bussing” in Holland. Shortly after, Frederick had to go home to Canada and get settled before he could marry Corry. In the meantime, Corry joined the Royal Dutch Navy and married Frederick by proxy. Two years later, Corry relocated to Canada and remarried Frederick. During their marriage, Corry and Frederick had four lovely children. Frederick passed away in 1984. SCHAAK, Kenneth William “Ken” Ken was born in Chesley, Ontario on March 6, 1942. He joined the Navy on September 30, 1960. He was drafted to serve on HMCS Inch Arran but went to sea on the HMCS Crescent. He sailed out of Halifax and made several crossings of the Atlantic as an ABS 1 Wireless Radio Operator. He was released in 1963 and worked as an auto mechanic until retirement. He has been a member of Hanover Legion Branch 130 for 22 years and resides in Hanover. SAWYER, David John David was born in Pembroke, Ontario on December 1, 1959. Sgt David Sawyer joined the Canadian Armed Forces on June 15, 1979 in Sudbury, ON as a Military Policeman. During his career, he was posted to 1 Military Police Platoon, CFB Calgary (1979-1985), Military Police Section, CFB North Bay (1985-1990). I/C Military Security Guard Unit, Canadian Embassy Moscow (1990-1992), I/C Royal Canadian Dragoon MP/RP Section, CFB Petawawa (1992-1995), SIU CFB North Bay (1995-1997), Ops Sgt of the Airfield Security Force HQ, CFB Trenton (1997-2000), NCIU Toronto (2000-2001). Sgt Sawyer retired from the Regular Force in 2001 and joined the reserve force in 2005 being posted back to CFB Petawawa with 2 Military Police Platoon. During Sgt Sawyer’s career he completed tours in Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Honduras. Sgt Sawyer received the Commander’s Commendation during every tour of duty. David retired on May 27, 2013 and lives in the Ottawa Valley.
