Military Service Recognition Book 484 ONTARIO COMMAND ROUSE, Sidney Roy Sidney was born in Swindon, England on March 17, 1900. He was educated at a British Military College so it is no surprise that he enrolled to serve with the British Navy during World War I. He immigrated to Canada after the war and peacefully served the people of Haileybury, Ontario as a Barber thereafter. Sidney passed away on November 24, 1960. ROUTLY, William F. William was born in London, England on January 21, 1896. He came to Canada as a boy and enlisted in the Army with Jim Billington and J. Hawkins. He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Canada, England and France during World War I. Jim was killed in France and William (Bill) was wounded by shrapnel in the foot on July 19, 1916. Because he carried on to the objective rather than go to the aid station the wound became infected and, back in England, after gangrene set in, half his leg was amputated below the knee. He returned to Toronto to learn to walk at Sunnybrook Hospital. He was very young and wanted to walk without a limp. Bill learned to drive, married Jim’s sister Florence and worked for Ford in Windsor. As 1929 approached, he bought an egg farm in Byron, near London, Ontario. Bill and Flo had three daughters. Two of his sons-in-law served in World War II. He was known as Pop to his grandchildren and the community. Bill passed away on August 8, 1974 and is greatly missed. ROUSSAIN, Norman F. Norman was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on July 12, 1920. He enlisted in the Army on October 15, 1939 and served with the 48th Field Infantry in England, Sicily, Italy, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany during World War II. Norman was wounded to the right shoulder during the war. He was discharged on September 20, 1945 and was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, and the 1939-45 Canadian Service Star. Norman has been an active member of Wawa Legion Branch 429 for over sixty years. Norman passed away on April 12, 2017
