During his deployment to Germany while searching for allied casualties, a German soldier appeared approximately twenty feet away and taking aim at Rae and shot him squarely in the heart. Unbeknownst to the German, his bullet pierced the bible but not the mirror. He returned home as ‘walking wounded’ and was discharged on September 17, 1945.
