Military Service Recognition Book 472 ONTARIO COMMAND STIMSON Arthur F. Arthur was born on August 4, 1921 in London, England. During his wartime service, he went to Galt, ON to learn Morse code. After Galt, he then went to Lachine, PQ for his basic training. Following his training, he was dispatched to Summerside, PEI. After posting to Summerside No. 1 GSR and got posted overseas. He sailed on the Louis Pasteur from Halifax, Canada to Liverpool, England along with approximately six thousand other who were off to fight in World War II. He was then posted to Gransden Lodge 405 Squadron and stayed there until the war was over. After that he was moved to Lonton on Ouse and sailed back to Canada from there on the Louis Pasteur. While in active service, he had a V2 rocket land in Edmonton, London nearby where he was standing while he was visiting his cousin. He was honourably released from active service at the age of twenty-four. He was then transferred to the Reserve, General Section, and Class E on October 12, 1945. In civilian life he worked as a jeweler and worked for Robt. Amell & Co in Toronto where he worked for forty-five years as a jeweler/diamond setter. He resided in East York, ON and was married to Florence L. Stimson and together they had two children. Arthur is now 93 years old and is a full time resident of The Guildwood Nursing Home in Scarborough. He is active in many Guildwood activities such as leading sing songs, poems, trivia, bingo and playing the mouth organ to accompany the guitarist. STRANG, William Russell William was born on February 19, 1896 in Chesley Lake, ON. He enlisted in the Army on May 17, 1918 and served with the 78th in England during World War II. Upon returning from England, Russell later married Nettie Middleton and they raised one son. He farmed in the Allenford area until 1955 when he started a company, Strang Cedar Ltd. with his son. He operated this business until his death on January 6, 1973 and the business is still in operation today. William passed away on January 6, 1973. STODDARD, William M. “Bill” Bill was born on March 17, 1924 in Toronto, ON. He enlisted in the Air Force on August 16, 1944. He completed W.A.G. training in Base Jarvis, ON and Guelph University. He went on to become a Staff Instructor at Malton Airport in Toronto. After his discharge from service, Bill joined L.C.B.O. and for many years was an audit supervisor for the entity travelling widely throughout the province. Bill has been a member of the Bala Legion Branch 424 for 25 years.
