433 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RISTO, Leonard G. Leonard was born on May 2, 1923 in Eganville, Ontario. He served with the General Service Class # 861657 in England during World War II. When speaking about his wartime experiences, he mentioned walking through waist high water with ice on the surface while holding his riffle above his head. Leonard passed away on August 18, 2001. ROBERTS, William L. William was born on November 5, 1924 in Niagara Falls, ON. He enlisted in the Army on July 20, 1940. He served with the Lincoln and Welland regiment, 4th Canadian Army Division during World War II. His service took him to Canada, England, France, Holland, Germany and Belgium. He was with the Scout and Sniper Platoon. His medals include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, France and Germany Star and the 1939 – 1945 Star. After his discharge on September 14, 1945, he moved to Wawa where he worked as a miner and was involved in the Legion with the Wawa Branch 429 for 48 years. William passed away on July 12, 1998. RITCHIE, Wenford M. Wenford was born on April 20, 1923 in Kentville, Nova Scotia. He enlisted in the Air Force on September 11, 1941 with the 6 Group 433 Squadron. He served with the rank of Pilot Officer (air gunner) in Canada and England during World War II. He only survived 12.55 operational hours before being shot down and killed in action on October 6, 1944. His squadron was targeting Dortmund, Germany along with 522 other aircrafts. This was the greatest effort by the Canadian group in the War. He was one of the two Halifaxes (out of no.6 group) along with two Lancasters and one Mosquito lost on this raid. He has earned the following medals: 1939 – 1945 War Medal, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, General Service Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Bar.
