223 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HENSHAW, John John was born in Centre Lea, Nova Scotia on October 28, 1933. He enlisted in the Army on June 11, 1951. He served with the 81st Field Artillery, Royal Canadian Artillery, 4 Royal Canadian Horse Artillery and 2 Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in Korea and Germany. He was discharged on August 10, 1974. John has been a member of Pembroke Legion Branch 72 for 37 years. HERMSEN, George P. George was born in Little Shute, Wisconsin, United States on February 1, 1924. He enlisted in the Army on February 2, 1942. He served with the Algonquin Regiment and the Queen’s Own Rifles in Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Belgium, and Holland during World War II. He took part in the liberation of Holland and suffered heavy shelling by the Germans in Antwerp. He was discharged on January 29, 1946. Lance Corporal Hermsen was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-45 Star, the Defence Medal, and the Italy Star. He was a member of Kapuskasing Legion Branch 85 for 51 years. George passed away on May 24, 2004. HERD, Walter “Bud” Bud was born on July 24, 1924 in Cooksville, ON. He enlisted in the Army on August 24, 1943. He served with the Royal Highland Regiment of Canada, 1st Battalion, 2nd Division in France during World War II. Bud was captured by the Germans in Spycker, France on a September morning in 1944. He became a prisoner of war held in Dunkirk, France over Christmas. To his family and loved ones he was missing and presumed dead. He was released in a prisoner exchange in the spring of 1945 and he returned to England to recuperate and regain his weight and strength. Bud was discharged on May 26, 1945.
