War Service Recognition Booklet 28 This photo was taken sometime in the summer of 1959 at the War Memorial, Water Street, St. Johnʼs Newfoundland. In the center of the picture, leading the Honour Guard is Sgt. Major James Coffey. During the Second World War, he also served as a member of a select Buckingham Palace guard that served to protect the young Princess Elizabeth, and her sister, Princess Margaret. As a sergeant major of the army reserves during the late 1950s, he was given the honour of leading the honour guard for the new queen (and Prince Phillip) during her inaugural visit to St. Johnʼs.
