They attended school in Bruley for about 6 months out of the year. At an early age, the boys were taken out of school to tend to daily chores and fishing in order to help out the family. They grew their own vegetables and cows and sheep were a main source of survival. In the early fifties, the family was one of the last ones to leave Bruley; they moved to Ferndale. At the time of their arrival to Ferndale, there were only 8 families living in the community. Eventually, stages were erected down by the waterside, where each man had their own boat and in their spare time, they would go fishing. It was in Ferndale that all three brothers set down their roots, got married and raised their own families. All three brothers at some point served in the merchant marine and joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch in Placentia in the late 70s, early 80s. On September 26, families and friends held a celebration, to make a tribute to these three brothers, veterans, and legionnaires. A marker was placed on a veranda, in the pathway heading down to the stages that they once owned. While their original stages no longer exist, newer stages have been built on those sites and are very much used today.
