Mental Health Awareness ● Sensibilisation à la santé mentale 41 Victimization of people with mental illnesses Did you know? One in four people with a mental illness are likely to be a victim of violence each year. The trauma and stress of being victimized can heighten someone’s vulnerability, which can worsen the symptoms of their mental illness, increase the likelihood of becoming homeless, and negatively impact their quality of life. Victimization of people with mental illnesses also happens during incarceration; up to 60% of Canadian inmates have reported being victimized within the criminal justice system, and people with mental illnesses often have a higher risk of experiencing victimization. People with mental illnesses who have been in conflict with the law typically have higher rates of homelessness, severe substance use, fewer social supports, and experiences of being victimized. Because victimization is a risk factor for violence in both general populations and those with mental illnesses, victimization, a history of crime, and severe mental illness symptoms can increase the risk of victimization. When examining the research on the rate of violence among people with mental illnesses, it is important to consider the rates of victimization faced by marginalized groups. How can you help? It can be hard to know how to help others struggling with mental illness. Here are some tips for supporting people who may be struggling: Be clear that mental health issues are common, and everyone deserves support. Provide positive feedback and acknowledge their strengths through words of encouragement. Show them you’re concerned. This can be through asking them how they’re doing or telling them that you’re there to help. Ask questions about how they feel instead of making assumptions. Acknowledge and validate their feelings, make sure you don’t diminish them. Model kindness and empathy, tell them you understand. Use open body language to communicate that you care. Remember, you are not a trained professional. If you think someone is at risk of putting themselves in danger, get help immediately.
