Throughout her career, Mrs. McCain lobbied for social justice for Canadian women, families, and for the social welfare system that is often taken for granted today. She has been active in organizations that promote education, music, and the arts, at the provincial and national levels. She is a founding member of the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Foundation in New Brunswick which is devoted to the elimination of family violence through public education and research. Mrs. McCain chaired its capital campaign to endow a Family Violence Research Centre in partnership with the University of New Brunswick. The MMFC is a member of the Alliance of Canadian Research Centres on Gender-BasedViolence, which includes the following research centres: The Centre for Research & Education on Violence against Women and Children (CREVAWC) The FREDA Centre for Research on Violence against Women and Children RESOLVE: Research and Education for Solutions toViolence andAbuse - Alberta RESOLVE: Research and Education for Solutions toViolence andAbuse - Manitoba RESOLVE: Research and Education for Solutions toViolence andAbuse - Saskatchewan RAIV: Recherches Appliquées et Interdisciplinaires sur les Violences intimes, familiales et structurelles The Centres are responsible for researching proactive approaches to the prevention of family violence, as well as the collaborative study towards issues such as shelters, special programs, and public education projects for victims of family violence. Mandate: The Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research (MMFC) undertakes activities that will contribute broadly to the elimination of family violence from society.They provide anAtlantic Canadian perspective on research in the field of family violence and actively seek the participation of researchers from across the country and around the world.
