There are often conversations about what unhealthy and abusive relationships look like, but we also need to talk about what we should be looking for in healthy relationships. Like many social skills, healthy behaviours in relationships are learned and practiced, and not just something we are born with. Healthy relationships need trust and communication so you can talk to your partner about your feelings and concerns without fearing that they will become angry. Healthy relationships require high levels of trust between all partners. Disagreements and conflict are common and normal in all relationships, but in a healthy relationship you respect each other’s concerns and leave an argument feeling respected and heard, even if you don’t agree. People in relationships often have common interests and enjoy spending time together, but we are all individuals and it’s healthy to have separate interests and to spend time apart. Humans are complex and we are all looking for something different in our relationships, but as a rule of thumb here are some expectations you can have for a healthy relationship: 1.Your partner encourages you to go after your goals. 2.You have both mutual and separate interests. You can do things together and be happy, but you’re also able to do things apart. 3. Boundaries are discussed, honoured, and respected. 4.They make you feel happy, loved, and respected. Mature couple photo created by freepik - www.freepik.com
