Children may try to stop the violence by causing a distraction or intervening, but this can be dangerous. It’s important for children to know that the best and most important thing for them to do is keep themselves safe. Safety planning can help teach children how to protect themselves and keep themselves safe. When developing a safety plan with children, consider: - Having your children pick a safe room/place in the house, preferably with a lock on the door and phone access. - Have your children pick a safe place outside the home and practice how to leave. - Creating a code word so that children know when they need to get to safety and call for help. - Teaching your children how to call for help.Talk to your children about using a neighbour’s phone and how to call 911. - Ensure that children know their full name and address. Rehearse with your child what they will say when they call for help. Plush photo created by pvproductions - www.freepik.com
