255 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SAVAGE, George Felton WWI &WWII George was born in Eastman, Quebec in 1898. He went overseas in World War I as a signaler, saw active service and was gassed. In World War II, he went overseas as a major after serving as a chief instructor in infantry training in the McGill COTC and general staff in MD No. 4. He was attached to the military government in Westphalia, Germany, first with the US Army and then with the British occupation forces as director of education and religion. He returned with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He received his university training at Bishop’s, gaining both BA an MA degrees. He entered the teaching profession after completing his education. He served for 25 years on the staff of Baron Byng High School and in 1947 was appointed vice principal of West Hill. He took an active part in various organizations. He was chairman of the citizenship and education committee and the Dominion Command, The Royal Canadian Legion. He served the Provincial Association of Protestant Teachers in a variety of offices, including that of honorary treasurer. He was an active Mason, a member of the Maple Leaf Chapter, Royal Arch Masons and served on the Community Council N.D.G. He was also a member of the Montreal West Curling Club. His wife was Helen Reid Cockfield of Montreal and he had one son, Donald. George passed away in 1953. SEDDON, Henry WWI Henry was born in Bacup, Lancashire, England in 1891. He served in World War I with the 36th Battalion in England and France. He was killed in action in France in 1918. SHEPHERD, Leonard Doug PEACETIME Leonard was born on August 17, 1936 in Elkhorn, Manitoba. He joined the Army in 1958 in Winnipeg and posted to RCEME School in Kingston. He held postings in Canada in Calgary and Shilo then to Germany in 1961. Doug married Anne in 1959 and they had two daughters, Katherine in 1961 and June in 1964. He was later posted to Egypt with the United Nations in 1966. He went back to Wainwright, Calgary, then a six-month tour in Cyprus with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse as a master corporal. In 1974, he was in Lahr, Germany as a sergeant. Doug was released in 1978. He went on with the CIC becoming a captain in the air reserves. In 1990, Doug moved to Kimberly, BC and passed a course to operate steam engines. In 2000, he moved to Wetaskiwin and volunteered over 17000 hours with the Reynolds Alberta Museum. Doug and his wife decided to retire and settled at Shoal Lake, Manitoba. He has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Shoal Lake Branch 72. Doug and Anne are a good example of a family who gave a lot to the country and all the communities they resided in.
