247 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SVEINSSON, Laurence Ross WWII Laurence was born in Winnipeg in 1921, the son of Valdimar and Ingiborg Sveinsson. On June 28, 1946 he married Doris Sedo of Dugald, Manitoba. They had four children: Laurence David, Ingrid Gail and twins, Heather and Darlene. All three girls have the same birthday – May 4. He enlisted at Winnipeg in December 1940 and trained at Camp Borden, Camp Debert and served overseas in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was discharged in December 1945. SWAINSON, Arthur K. PEACETIME Arthur was born east of Baldur; the son of Ingolfur and Liney Swainson. Major Arthur K. Swainson enlisted on February 15, 1956 at London, ON. In Canada he has been stationed at Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and in Europe at Meta, France and Lahr, Germany. Arthur graduated from United College and the University of Manitoba. He graduated in 1954 with a L.L.B. Degree in Law and a little more than a year later was commissioned in the legal branch of the RCAF. He spent a year as staff legal officer of #14 Training Group (Winnipeg); three years as Deputy Judge Advocate at RCAF (Ottawa) and in 1960 as staff legal officer at Air Defence Command St. Hubert, QC. On November 5, 1955 he married Marion Olson. They had three daughters, Cathy, Nancy and Signe. SWAINSON, Maurice Bjorn RCMP Maurice was born in Baldur, Manitoba the son of Ari and Bjorg Swainson. He joined the RCMP on completion of High School. He retired after 25 years of service and then worked as a computer operator in Montreal where he resided with his wife, Gabrielle, and their three girls, Lise, Anne and Linda. TEMPLETON, Sidney “Lloyd” WWII Lloyd was born in Baldur, Manitoba; the son of Sidney and Margaret Templeton. Lloyd enlisted in the RCAF in September 1941 at Vancouver. He served in Canada at St. Thomas, Hagersville, Ontario (three years) and Alliford Bay, Queen Charlotte Islands (for one year). He was an Airframe Mechanic by trade; also with a fourteen piece dance band and eighteen piece show orchestra while at Hagersville. On December 5, 1942 he married V. Irene McLean of Belmont. They had two daughters, Judith Lianne and Doreen Anna, and a son, Edward Robert. After the war, Lloyd worked as a salesman in Calgary. THIERRIEN, Gerard “Gerry” WWII Gerard was born in Mariapolis, Manitoba, the son of Adeodat and Irene (Fraser) Thierrien. Gerry enlisted on October 19, 1943 at Winnipeg. He trained at Peterborough and Borden, Ontario before going overseas where he was stationed at Aldershot, England. On November 29, 1939 he married Irene Levreault. Their children were Jeanine, Ubald and Lauraine. Gerry farmed south of Baldur after receiving his discharge. He also worked as a carpenter. THOMAS, John WWI John was born in Swansea, Wales on February 14, 1891, the son of John and Ester Thomas. He enlisted in Brandon, training there and in Winnipeg and hence to England. John served in France with a burial party after the war ended and he was discharged in August 1919. He came to Canada in 1902 and except for the time he was in the Army he lived and farmed in the Glenora area. On December 1, 1926 he married Blanche Hazel Preston and they had two sons, John E. Thomas and William Keith. John passed away on March 16, 1967. THOMAS, Roland Victor WWII Ronald was born in Kelso, Saskatchewan the son of Constable Joseph A. and Bernadette Thomas. Roland enlisted in the RCAF at Winnipeg and trained at Brandon, Trenton, Dauphin and Halifax. Overseas he served at Bournemouth, Hastings, London, Darlington and Blackpool in England and at Blankenberge, Belgium and Oldenburg, Germany. He served in Germany with Disarmament Wing for seven months after VE Day. On August 5, 1946 he married Colette Gravel. They had one son “Gilbert” Paul. Ronald resided in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario where he was the manager of Corporation Insurance. THORBERGSON, Thorbergur WWI Thorbergur was born on May 12, 1901 in Iceland, the son of Andres and Palina Thorbergson. He moved to Baldur as a little child and at the age of sixteen he enlisted in Winnipeg with the 223rd Battalion and was sent to England a little over a month later and on to France. He served in battle at Passchendaele, Ambiens and Arras where he was killed in action on October 10, 1918 at only eighteen and a half years of age. Thorbergur was commended for his forthright and willing characteristics.
