He enlisted in Winnipeg in March 1941 and trained at Gordon Head, BC and was an instructor at Vernon and Nanaimo, BC. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant. He was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion and VFW, USA. He was part owner and General Manager of Green Cross of USA after his discharge. He married Margaret Bjarnason of Winnipeg and they had a son, James, and a daughter, Sandra. SOLE, Oliver WWI Oliver was born in Colfax, North Dakota, USA, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Sole, later of Glenora, Manitoba. He enlisted in Winnipeg with the 107th in February 1916; training there and at Camp Hughes. He was later transferred to the Machine Gun Section as Lance Corporal. He was sent to France where he was killed in action on August 10, 1918. SORENSEN, Aage “Ole” WWII Ole was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Sorensen. On October 19, 1945 he married Ida Ford and they have one daughter, Karen. Ole enlisted in Winnipeg in September 1940, training at Shilo, Quebec City and served overseas taking part in the Dieppe Raid and was taken as a Prisoner of War. After the war, Ole was a postmaster in Mather, Manitoba. STANDING, Clarence T. WWI Clarence was born in Baldur, Manitoba in 1893. He joined the 43rd Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders and was killed in action in Belgium in 1917. STERLING, John G. WWI John was born in Baldur, Manitoba in 1891. He joined the 78th Winnipeg Grenadiers and was killed in action in France in 1918. STEVENS, Charlie F. WWI Lance Corporal Charlie F. Stevens was born in Baldur, Manitoba on April 23, 1893, the son of Frederick and Elizabeth Stevens. He enlisted at Winnipeg in January 1915 and trained there and at Shorncliffe Camp, Bramshott, England. He was wounded in action twice and was killed in action on August 25, 1918 while serving with the 43rd Battalion Cameron Highlanders. STEVENS, Sydney H. “Syd” WWI Sydney was born on April 20, 1895, the son of Frederick and Elizabeth Steven. Syd enlisted in July 1915 with the 78th Battalion at Winnipeg; receiving his training there and at Camp Hughes in Canada and Bramshott and Le Harve abroad. He went to France in January 1917 and was wounded following Easter Sunday at Vimy Ridge. He was returned to England in May and served with the Canadian Ordnance Corp until his return in March 1919. He married Margaret Sims of London, England. STILWELL, Frederick Henry “Fred” WWII Fred was born in Killarney, Manitoba, the son of George and Jane Stilwell. In 1935 he married Maude Smith and they had three children, Florence, Mary and George. Fred enlisted in Winnipeg and trained at Victoria, BC and was stationed at Halifax and Shelburne and served at St. John’s on the HMCSWoodstock on patrol around England at the time of Invasion. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Baldur Branch 108. STILWELL, Jack “John D.” WWII Jack was born in Baldur, Manitoba, the son of George and Jane Stilwell. On May 16, 1945 he married Agnes M. Aitken of Glasgow, Scotland. They had three children: Anne, Andrew and William. He enlisted at Winnipeg on September 11, 1940 and was stationed at Fort William and Debert and served overseas in Aldershot, Godalming, Brighton, Tunbridge-Wells. He also served with the Manitoba Dragoons in the European Campaign from Normandy through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany to the end of WorldWar II. Jack served as President of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 216 at Elgin, Manitoba. STILWELL, Victor C. “Vic” WWII Vic was born in Lena, Manitoba, the son of George and Jane Stilwell. He married Kay Gillis on December 30, 1970. This was his second marriage and they had three children, Dianne, Elaine and Robbie. Vic enlisted in Winnipeg, trained at Shilo, Borden and Debert and overseas, he served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. SUTTON, Robert A. “Bert” WWII Robert was born in Wakopa, Manitoba on January 26, 1916. He enlisted on June 28, 1942 and trained at Portage and Red Deer. He went overseas the same year. He served in Sicily and Italy then went back to Holland and France. He returned to Canada in December 1945 and received his discharge in January 1946. Bert was employed with the CNR and lived in Glenora.
