243 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SEXSMITH, Murray Stanley RCMP Murray, the son of Ernest and Lenoa Sexmith joined the RCMP in Winnipeg in 1947. He was stationed at “K” Division in Alberta until 1952. He was stationed in Hong Kong for three years and then in Ottawa, ranking Superintendent i/c “B” Branch, RCMP Security Service. On June 14, 1952 he married Jean Kvznetsov. SIGMAR, George WWI George was born in the RM of Argyle on September 24, 1891, the son of Gudrun and Sigmar Sigurjonson. He enlisted on February 6, 1918 and served in the Canadian Air Corps. He married Sigrid Johnson on August 25, 1951. George was a commercial traveller for the Warren Knit Woolen Company of Canada for several years. He was a member of the North West Travellers Association. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Winnipeg and also a member of the Male Voice Choir. George passed away on April 30, 1962. SIGMAR, Stefan WWI Stefan was born in the RM of Argyle on January 21, 1888, the son of Sigmar and Gudrun Sigurjonson. He enlisted on March 18, 1918 but served only briefly due to ill health. He attended the University of Manitoba for two years, then farmed on the old Sigmar farmstead (along with his brother Fred) until his death on November 4, 1947. On May 26, 1926 he married Emily Bjornson. They had four children, Lloyd, Sigrun Walterson, Murray and Grace (deceased at the age of seven). SIGURDSON, Baldwin WWII Baldwin was born in the Municipality of Argyle, the son of Herbert and Kristos Sigurdson. In September 1958 he married Shirley Petrick. He enlisted at Fort Osborne in 1943 and trained at Portage and Woodstock and was stationed at Shilo. He served overseas in the United Kingdom and in Italy where he lost a leg in a mine. SIGVALDASON, John P. WWII John was born on February 9, 1904 in Baldur, the son of Einar and Kristine (Gudnason) Sigvaldason. He attended Hola and Baldur Schools; graduated in Arts from the University of Manitoba in 1933, obtained his Bachelor of Education degree in 1939. He taught school until being appointed Inspector of Schools. He served under Hon. Ivan Schultz in the Department of Education. In 1942, John enlisted in the Air Force at Winnipeg. He trained in Lachine and Trenton, Yorkton and Ottawa as well as in the United Kingdom. He was discharged in March 1946 with the rank of Squadron Leader. Upon discharge he was brought into the Department of External Affairs and was posted as Assistant Secretary of Canada House, London, England where he served for six years. On return to Ottawa, he was sent to Pakistan in the Consular Service. In 1958, he was recalled to Ottawa to become Director of the Inspection Service of the Department of External Affairs. In 1961, he was appointed Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia and was transferred on February 11, 1964 to the Canadian Legations at Oslo and Reykjavik where he served as Canadian Ambassador until he retired in July 1969, on reaching retirement age. In 1969, he joined the staff of Brandon University, teaching political science until September 1971. John married Olga Gasteiger. They had two sons and one daughter. SIMPSON, Francis William WWI Francis was born in Toronto on April 22, 1885, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George C. Simpson. He enlisted in Brandon in June 1918, trained at Brandon and served overseas at Eastbourne, England. He returned to Canada in 1919. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Baldur Branch 108. He farmed successfully in Glenora where he passed away on May 17, 1966. On December 3, 1919, he married Nellie P. Lawrence. They had two children, Jean Marie and George Andrew. SINCLAIR, Donald WWI Donald was born in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland in 1880. He served in the Army Veterinary Corps in England and France duringWorldWar I. Donald passed away in 1936. SKAPTASON, Freeman H. “Frim” WWII Frim, the son of Anna and Halli Skaptason enlisted in Winnipeg in July 1941 and trained at Gordon Head and Kingston, ON. He served overseas in the United Kingdom, NW Europe, Italy, and Africa and returned with the rank of Captain. In 1941 he married Helga Reykdal and they have two daughters, Penelope and Paula, and a son, Greg. After the war, he worked as a Regional Director of VLA, Manitoba. He has been an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 30, West Kildonan. SKAPTASON, H. Marelius “Marl” WWII Marl was born in Argyle, the son of Anna and Halli Skaptason. He married Johanna Johnson of Ashern. They had two children, a son Stephen of London, England and daughter, Holly. He enlisted at Winnipeg in October 1943 and trained at Kingston and served overseas in the United Kingdom. He had the rank of Sergeant.
