223 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca GOETHALS, Lloyd Mark PEACETIME Lloyd was born in Swan Lake, Manitoba, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Goethals. He lived at Edmonton where he is a Navigator in the Canadian Armed Forces. On August 17, 1969 he married Grace Lavitzkie and they had three sons Lloyd, Lionel and Charles. He enlisted at St. Jean, Quebec and was stationed at St. Jean Kingston, Winnipeg and Edmonton. At one point, he was with the 435 (T) Squadron (Hercules). GOODMAN, Jonas Bjorn Peter “Pete” WWI Jonas was born in Iceland on July 27, 1878, the son of Benoni and Margaret Gudmundson. Pete was a travelling salesman before enlisting on November 30, 1915. He served for some time in France, returning to Canada in February 1918. He worked for the Soldier’s Settlement Board and farmed on the marsh island south of Glenboro. Pete’s wife’s name was Becky. Pete served as municipal councillor for the RM of Argyle for many years. Pete passed away on August 24, 1934. GOODMANSON, Gudmundar Einar “Mundi” WWII Mundi was born in Baldur, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Goodmanson. In April 1947 he married Jean Steele of Glenboro and they had two children, Linda and Warren. He enlisted at Winnipeg in 1941 and trained at Brandon. He was stationed at Guelph and Clinton, Ontario and served overseas in England on the Bomber Command at Gilbraltar Coastal Command, Belgium Transport Command and was discharged in November 1945. GORDON, Donald Ross “Donny” PEACETIME Donny was born in Baldur, Manitoba, the son of Gerald and Hortense Gordon. In June 1958, he married Dorothy Rose Bella of Melville, SK and they had three children, Kathryn, Deborah and Gerald. Donny enlisted in Winnipeg and trained at Quebec, Ontario and Vancouver. He was stationed overseas in France and North Africa. He was discharged in 1959. GORDON, Robert C. PEACETIME Robert was born in Baldur, Manitoba, the son of Gerald and Hortense Gordon. He enlisted in Winnipeg in March 1953 with the RCAF and trained at St. Jean, QC and Clinton, ON. He was stationed at Goose Bay, Labrador; Frobisher Bay, NWT, Centralia, ON and AFHQ in Ottawa. After service, he was employed as a Service Representative for IBM Canada Ltd. In 1958 he married Marjorie Stephens and they have three children, Laura, Cheryl and Brian. GREEN, Albert Alfred WWI Albert was born in London, England in 1882 and came to Canada as a young man in 1910. In 1907, he married Gertrude Franklin and they lived at Neelin, Manitoba. Their children were Horace, Rose, Ivey, Edmund and Alfred. Albert enlisted in 1916 in Winnipeg with the 100th Grenadier Guards during World War I. He was killed in France in 1917. He had, however, seen twelve years of service with the Royal Marines at Gibraltar. He was a champion boxer in the middle-weight division. GUDNASON, Holmgeir “Hommi” WWI Holmgeir was born in Baldur, Manitoba on May 7, 1897, the son of Thorlakur and Inga Gudnason. He enlisted in Baldur on January 12, 1918, trained at Brandon and Seaforth, England. He served at the Battle of Cambrai and was returned to Canada in July 1919. In 1924, he married Herborg Kristjanson in Wynyard, Saskatchewan. They had four children, Clarence, Victor, Hellen and Linda. Hommi changed his name from Gudnason to Holmes. They lived in Wynyard from 1924 to 1953, the time of his death. GUDNASON, Jacob “Kobbi” WWI Jacob was born on May 27, 1892 in Baldur, Manitoba, the son of Thorlakur and Inga Gudnason. He enlisted in Baldur in February 1916 and sailed to England in November and on to France in February 1917. He served at Vimy Ridge in France where he was wounded in April 1917. He returned to battle but ill health caused his return to Canada in December 1918. Kobbi farmed seven miles north of Baldur until retirement to Glenboro where he lived with his wife Kristin (Kristjanson) whom he married in 1933. They had one son, Arnold Kenneth Gudnason. Kobbi passed away on November 1, 1971. HALL, George WWII George was born in Morden, Manitoba, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hall. In 1942, he married Pearle Harper and they had three children, Wilda, Carol and Glen. George enlisted in Brandon, trained at Shilo and was stationed at Petawawa, Ontario. He held the rank of Sergeant. HAMILTON, Stewart WWII Stewart was born in Carnduff, Saskatchewan, the son of J.A. and Jennie Hamilton. He farmed near Glenboro, Manitoba. In July 1950, he married Eva Smith and they had eight children, Heather, Albert, Glen, Ronald, David, Ricky, Janice and Lorna. Stewart enlisted in Winnipeg and trained at Edmonton and Lethbridge.
