221 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca FORBES, Ross PEACETIME Ross was born in Crystal City, Manitoba, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Forbes. He enlisted in Winnipeg and trained at Saint-Jean, Quebec. He was stationed in Clinton, Aylmer, London and Ottawa, ON, Saskatoon, SK, Puntie Mountain, BC, Rivers, Gimli and Winnipeg. On August 15, 1959 he married Margaret McTavish (deceased) of Baldur. They had two daughters, Lynn and Cathy. FREDERICKSON, Arman WWI Arman was born in the RM of Argyle on May 11, 1897, the son of Olgeir and Vilborg Frederickson. He enlisted with the 34th Fort Garry Horse on May 14, 1918 receiving his training there and in Eastern Canada and Montreal. He was discharged on August 15, 1919 at Winnipeg. Arman married Gudrun Storm on July 23, 1924. Arman was a proud member of The Royal Canadian Legion Fort Rouge Branch 97. He served in the Winnipeg Police Force for many years. FREDERICKSON, Christine WWI Nurse Christine Frederickson was born in Iceland on July 9, 1896, the daughter of Fridrik and Gudlaug Frederickson. She came as a child to the RM of Argyle with her parents from Duluth, Minnesota, USA. She took her nurses training at the Strathcona Hospital in Alberta and graduated on March 16, 1916. She enlisted in the Canadian Army Medical Corp and was at the Strathcona Hospital (Military Division) when she was stricken with the Spanish flu on October 24, 1918. Christine died four days later. GALLOWAY, Emory Nelson BOER WAR Emory was born in Creemore, Ontario in 1880, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Galloway. His wife’s name was Hattie and they had one son, Norman. Emory enlisted in Winnipeg with the Fort Garry Horse and was enroute to Capetown when the war terminated, however, he put in some time in Capetown. Emory is deceased. GALLOWAY, Stanley Adair “Stan” WWI Stanley was born in Pilot Mound, Manitoba on December 29, 1894, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Galloway. He enlisted in Souris in 1915, training there and at Winnipeg and going overseas in 1916. He was promoted to Corporal and served with the Military police in Canada and for some time overseas and then served in several important battles including the last one in which the Germans capitulated. He was on the “Champion Tug-of-War Team” for all Canadian Forces for two years. In 1935 he married Nancy Johnston and they had two children, Bill and Mona. Stan is deceased. GARRETT, Frank WWI Frank was born on November 19, 1900 at Bushey Paddock Lodge, England. He enlisted with England’s RAF on October 8, 1918 during World War I and served on the continent until 1919 as a transport driver in France, Belgium and mainly in Germany. He was discharged in January 1920. Frank moved to Canada in 1921 and was employed with Chas Hamilton until 1941 when he took employment with HB Mining and Smelting. He retired to Glenora, MB in 1966. Frank was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Baldur. GARRETT, William “Bill” WWI William was born on October 7, 1893 in Eastbourne, Sussex, England. He came to Canada in April 1914 and went to work for Charlie Hamilton in Baldur. Bill joined the 222nd, trained at Camp Hughes and Bay of Fundy before going overseas two weeks later. Arriving in France he was transferred to the 8th Battalion Little Black Devils. He landed at Hanie; then on to De Bois, and Vimy Ridge and over the top on April 19, 1916. Being a runner, it was Bill’s duty to help out the chaps who were shell shocked. On April 28 they went on to Arlsou and took over the Hindenburg Line. In August 1918 they topped Hill 70. Their return was on foot, mostly under the cover of darkness; but on September 2, 1918, Bill was wounded. He returned to England and home to Canada and was discharged in 1919. He went back to Hamilton’s but in 1920 bought his own farm in Glenora where he farmed until 1968 when he retired. Bill passed away in 1971 after a lengthy illness and is buried in Baldur. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Baldur. GARWOOD, Paul WWII Paul was born in Lisbon, Ohio, USA; the son of H. Garwood. Paul enlisted in the Canadian Army at Toronto, took his training there and in England. He served in Continental Europe, including France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and in Poland. They were attached to an English regiment of Husars. Following the armistice he served eighteen months with the occupational troops on the Mediterranean, being stationed at Friesta. In 1968, he married Joyce Kavaner. They had two children, Mrs. Mavis Howell of Cartwright and Robert Kavaner of Smiley, Saskatchewan. In 1972, Paul took over the Baldur Bake and Coffee Shop.
